RPTools bought out by WotC !!! ** April's Joke **

Post by trevor »

It's been under wraps for a while, but it's finally official:

Wizards of the Coast has bought out RPTools !

They've been watching for a while, and feel we have a fantastic product and community.

You might be wondering why they would buy us out even though they have their own VT coming up this year. There are two reasons for that, first rptools also has other tools available that they don't support yet, and the other is to make MT and their gametable compatible, so that they can assimilate the large, fast growing and friendly community that we've built.

What this means In the short term I will be halting direct development of MapTool. Instead I'll be working with the WotC ddi development team on integrating the two VTs. Once that's done (some time before gencon) I'll hand over development of MT to their development team and move on to a top secret project.

Soooo Hurray ! ! !

Great, another "Fluid/E-Tools" debacle, just in time for the new edition.

I know- there used to be some other obscure "holiday" on April 1, but from now on my calendars will note it as WotCBRPT Day.

Seriously? (sorry, April Fool's paranoia). Congrats Trevor, I realize how big this is for you! I do have a question though- will the program remain free??? Also, how much control will you have now? I have to admit, I'm hesitant to say this is a good move (as many companies will buy out competition just to let it sit incomplete to keep a monopoly) BUT if you, the creator of the program, are excited and amicable to this then I'm a bit more optimistic. It looks like all your hard work has paid off a bit more Trevor so, again, congrats. :)

Random Thought- Will we be officially allowed to upload tokens (based on published artwork)and maps that are under WOTC's copyright umbrella now??? Just wondering.

Please, once it's in WotC's hands and trevor's collected his big fat check, you'll see nothing of it. It's like MS buying out the little guy to eliminate competition and not even using the products they buy.

It's not like trevor has exhibited any history of listening to MapTool users anyway.

Pfft!

Hurry!

People should grab the source code before WotC locks it down and MT, as we know it, will be gone forever.

I just can't stand sell-outs.

Trevor is now officially off my Christmas card list. ;)

In related news, the logo of Flatearth crisps is awesome.
