Gamma World Session

Post by Phergus »

Deciding to take a brief break from the swords & sorcery of DragonQuest, I pulled out the ancient 3rd Ed Gamma World rules and threw together an adventure for the group.

This is the post session recap and some screenshots.

2617-07-02 - Numex: Rinc & Oofam (December 27, 2008)
Participants:
Clara, Lakota, Weed, Wendy

After stopping at Fort Sell to pick up a few supplies for the road the group headed north along the Ancients roadway towards Rinc. The going is slow and they have to stop about two-thirds of the way there to camp for the night. Mid-morning of the following day, as the group approaches a section of the road that has collapsed into a large arroyo, they hear a scream and the sound of an energy weapon being fired from ahead of them.

After a long discussion, while the battle rages, the group moves forward to investigate. They reach the edge of the arroyo in time to see a giant centipede chewing on a lone man laying upon the bloody sand. Wendy and Clara unlease a hail of arrows and bullets at it while Lakota moves to the end of the collapsed bridge ands leap down onto it with his spear. Weed approaches with a makeshift club he found laying under the bridge.

Clara closes into melee combat with the creature rather than expend more of the limited supply of ammunition for her revolver. Lakota and Weed poke and bash at the centipede. The centipede responds by biting a big chunk out of Lakota who is fortunately resistant to its paralysis poison. Failing to impress the centipede with her arrows, Wendy uses her mental powers to create the illusion of a giant roadrunner and sends it running down the arroyo towards the combat. Her traveling companions, used to the slight purple tint of all of her illusions, realize that the roadrunner is indeed an illusion and don't go running off. The centipede however is feeling somewhat outnumbered and turns to flee. As the centipede attempts to get away the groups lands several blows fatally wounding it and it thrashes about the bottom of arroyo before finally expiring. Lakota peels off the undamaged carapace sections from the centipede while Wendy checks on the centipede's victim.

The man is mortally wounded and barely conscious as Wendy tries to make him comfortable and ease his pain with her first aid skills. The dying man regains consciousness just long enough to hand Wendy a sealed tube and mutter, "must find spusa" before succumbing to his wounds. From his dress the man appears to have been a member of the Archivists and in his shoulder pack they find some rations and a small stash of gold. Near where the man was laying in the arroyo the group finds the Archivist's energy pistol. With nothing more to be done for the dead man the group gathers the scavenged carapace and continues on to Rinc.

The adventurers arrive at Rinc just after noon. Rinc is a small community of 150 or so humans and mutants. It is surrounded by a large bramble wall with a open gate leading into it from the side facing the road. The group inquires around the village for someone named Spusa but turn up nothing. The carapace pieces are traded in for some partial carapace armor and a shield for Lakota. It will be a couple days before the armor is ready. The village tavern also provides sleeping quarters which Clara, Wendy and Weed take advantage of while Lakota goes out to sleep in the wild. The two days pass in relative peace. Clara, Wendy and Weed spend the time doing some hunting around the river bottom where they run into, but avoid combat with, a Horl Choo and a Obb. Their hunting efforts result in a brace of rabbits and a wild pig. The bounty of their efforts are traded for room and board plus some additional traveling rations.

On the night the armor is finished the group is gathered in the tavern once again when an Archivist comes into the establishment. Wendy approaches the Archivist, whose name is Bruce, and, after some discussion, learns that Bruce was to meet the deceased Archivist, Roger, who had a map to a lost Ancients site called SPUSA. Opening the tube that Wendy received from Roger, Bruce pulls out a map that shows the way to SPUSA by way of someplace called Oofam. Unfortunately the location of the map isn't immediately apparent and while very detailed is missing any markings to orient it. Bruce explains that it is an "aerial map" and shows how the terrain looks as if seen from a great height. Weed takes advantage of his Mimicry ability to change shape into a large bird and takes to the sky. Ascending as high as he can Weed determines that the map portrays the area between two mountain ranges east of Rinc. The trail to Oofam starts not far from where the group found the unfortunate Roger. Bruce proposes to hire the group to accompany him to SPUSA as protection, promising generous payment should they indeed find SPUSA.

Setting off the next morning the group makes a bit over half the distance to Oofam before setting camp. Warned by markings on the map of the presence of Arks in the nearby hills the group does not light a fire and keeps a careful watch through the night. The night having passed peacefully the group sets off the along the trail and arrives at the area marked Oofam on the map. Bruce explains that Oofam was probably a staging area for supplies being delivered by railroad to SPUSA. All that remains now are a few tumbled-down buildings, some curious discolorations of the ground and a crater interrupting the tracks leading further north. A large sand drift sits astride a spur of track heading east and Weed surmises that the drift may have formed over something on the track. As the group investigates the mound, Weed's spider-sense (Precognition) starts tingling and he calls out an alert of imminent danger. Moments later a Sand Sep leaps out of the sand on the mound latching onto Weed with its vicious bite. Lakota lunges at it with his spear but misses. Wendy uses her Mental Paralysis ability and is able to paralyze the sep in mid-leap with Weed wrapped around the sep constricting it. Focusing her concentration, Wendy is able to maintain the paralysis long enough to kill the vicious sep.

The attack of the sep had disturbed a large section of the sand revealing the corner of a large metal box shape beneath the mound. The group scavengers boards to dig away the sound from the box. Clara and Bruce are looking over the small crater on the tracks when a Parn appears from the other side rushing forward to attack with its sword-like antenna waving. Surprised both Clara's and Bruce's initial shots with their laser pistols go wide and but the noise alerts the other group members who come in to assist. The parn is clearly overwhelmed by the group and is soon put down by deadly hits from Clara, Bruce and Lakota. The group returns its excavating efforts and soon reveals large sliding doors on the side of the boxcar. Prying the doors open, they discover four crates made from that odd Ancients material called plastic and a large piece of machinery sitting on a pallet. Weed pokes about the machinery and gets a squirt of some oily fluid for his trouble. Bruce opens the crates though some type of control on the top of each one revealing various treasures of the Ancients.

While they were examining their finds a storm has rolled in from the east and in the flashes of lightning they see tower-like shapes on a hill several klicks to the east. Consulting their map they determine that hill is at or near the location of SPUSA. As the storm moves in bringing a heavy rain Clara, Wendy and Bruce seek shelter in the old rail car while Weed and Lakota take refuge in the tumbled ruins.

End of session.

Thanks. Gamma World is always good for laughs. The Weed character is a mutated Morning Glory plant.

Awesome write up, that was fun to read. Man, Gamma World, dang, I remember that from when I was a gamer as a kid. Brings back memories :)

Man, I love that we can attach content directly to forum posts now. Sweet.

I like your railroad map, nice use of the depression/hill stamps.
Dreaming of a 1.3 release

Yeah that is a great improvement over the old version. Kinda wish it could thumbnail the images and then link to the bigger version but just being able to attach them directly is a huge win.
