I was looking at some things the other day and realized the main problem with using the development builds is that not everyone may be on the same version and it could cause problems. How about building a auto-update into the tool so that it looks for the version of the most recent build and updates if needed. That way when a group meets they all know that everyone is on the same version.
Of course you would want to have this be something that could be disabled, and there is the issue of if stuff the DM got ready ahead of time is compatible with the new version. However I think this could be a useful tool addition to all the tools that connect to one another.
Update Tool

We have been looking at various ways of doing exactly this. We have been looking around for installers or pre-built packagers that do this sort of auto-update without us having to custom code it.
If we end up building it, we will probably boot-load the tool so that you can actually check what version the server is running and it will automatically get the version that the server is running for each of the clients.
Currently though, webstart provides the best way to do this. If you and all your users use the webstart feature it should help you keep on the same version.
Thanks for the interest, it is important to keep getting feedback like this so that we can attempt to prioritize community requested features higher.

This program uses Java and an auto updater but it isn't open source. You might get them to tell you what they are using though.

I would rather have a tool that when you try to connect to the server, if the versions are not the same..it checks to see if you have the proper code already...and asks if you want to restart Maptools to the proper version for the server. If not...gives you to option to download that version and run it automatically. This way if we find a bug in a version, especially the betas...we can still load whatever version of the beta we want to use and still connect with little hastle.
