IPv6 Support

Post by Nin »

It's more and more complicate to get an IPv4 address.
I want to use Maptool in future and therefore I would love to see MT supporting IPv6.

We have every intention of supporting IPv6.

It's not that different from IPv4 on the programming side, but the differences are enough that there will definitely be some coding changes. And I haven't looked into how the IPv6 link-local address assignments might effect UPNP and NAT-PMP, if at all. Also, most UPNP and NAT-PMP libraries either don't support IPv6 or have only experimental support, so I think if you're having problems in that regard, our solution will be, "use IPv4." At least until the third-party libraries improve.

I have a new wizard written for Start A Server, but the code was proof of concept using JavaFX technology which I didn't fully understand at the time. My plan now is to rewrite the wizard (I already have a new design done) and it will include support for IPv6. (Actually, it'll be completely network-agnostic, so it should work using two tin cans and a piece of string. But we'll see if I hit any snags while coding it.)

Do people still use UPNP considering the big security vulnerabilities with it?

I would guess that most people use UPNP because it's simply the path of least resistance in most cases.
