 Post subject: Maptool "MAPTOOL_DATADIR" Error
PostPosted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:48 am
Maptool used to work for me, as did the tokentool. As of today, neither one seems to work for me.

Maptool gives this error, when started:

Cant create the data directory "{0}". Try manually specifying the data directory by setting the environment variable "MAPTOOL_DATADIR". Search our forums for that name if you need help.

Steps taken to try to fix:
Updated Java
Delete all Maptool related folders, and re-downloading
Search both google and forums

It is not an issue with me having a non standard charecter in my username.

Tokentool problems:

Tokentool does not even really start, it does a short load icon next to the mouse, then does nothing after.

Operating System: Windows 7, home premium 64 bit

Solution that got Maptool to temporarily work, was to run it in admin mode, as long as it was in admin mode, it ran, and seemed to work fine. As soon as I disabled admin mode, it gave the same error message.

any help would deffinately be apriciated, since i cant seem to figure this one out on my own

Sounds like your Windows configuration isn't allowing MapTool to write to it's standard location (the directory .maptool/ under your home directory). That's why logging in as Admin fixed it.

Not sure why it would work previously and not now, but the obvious question is ... "What changed?"

The MAPTOOL_DATADIR can be specified on the command line to Java/MapTool to change where it stores stuff. The other forum posts (that you've apparently read) discuss how to do that.

i didnt quite understand how to manualy specify the directory, i am a bit tech oriented, but this is my first real experience working with java, that im aware of. I may not have found all of the topics to have read them all, but i did read several. thanks for explaining why admin mode worked though.

You just edit one of the .BAT files and add the option to the command line inside the file.

So you end up with a file that contains something like this...

Code:
java -DMAPTOOL_DATADIR=... -Xmx... -jar maptool-*.jar

Of course, the details will vary depending on which BAT file you choose.

okay, not running it in admin mode, while trying to figure out how to edit the .bat file, i instead ran it.

the file was Launch MapTool-512M-Memory. after doing so, it ran just fine when launched from that. i tried launching the normal launcher and it still gave the error.

as for what changed recently on my computer, obviously yes, something had to have changed, but the only things i can think of that changed are:

windows update, update java (after it wasnt working already), steam updating, and starting to mod skyrim, with the mod manager.

Someone who uses Windows will need to help with this. I don't use Windows at all so my recommendations are mostly regurgitating what I've read here -- I have no hands-on experience with it. Sorry.
