When i try to use the free hand tool, as i'm drawing everything seems as it should be but once i let go of the mouse both ends of the line are joined and the areas with in filled. How do i get a normal line drawing tool.

Set the fill (2nd box) to the white box with red slash (no texture).

Thank you that was the problem.
If you dont mind i'd also like to ask if its normal for all images that i try to drag and drop on to the map (in this case a bridge) to become tokens. I was trying to recreate the map shown in the introduction video in the overveiw section.

When you drag images to the token layer, they default to the set token size (see preferences). You can drag to another layer, like background and if set to free size (in preferences) they appear in their native size and you can resize from there. Be sure you're using MT version 1.3 b87 or before because b88 has a bug in this regard.

You can rotate tokens on the background layer by setting the facing. Using the mouse scroll wheel while holding shift key or shift-ctrl for fine rotation is how you do it.
