Post subject: Maptool Internet Connection error. HELP!!!
PostPosted: Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:20 am
I am getting a connection error, Timeout, error code. I have tried everything I can think of. I changed the port and done a port forwarding, tried just doing UPnP, and made sure it was activated on the Router, deactivated the firewall. But nothing that I tried would allow me to connect from the internet. Everyone locally was able to connect just fine.

When I tried the UPnP on the server it gives an error stating that he Network Gateway cannot be detected. Now other programs seemed to work fine. Such as Team Viewer which is what allowed me to try all these different things, also google+ hangouts worked fine with everyone. Is there something that I am missing? What other tricks or tips can anyone recommend or find worked for them?

Read the Networking FAQ and Setp-By-Step Guide to Server Debugging. Simply put: client connections rarely, if ever, require any special work, but the server must be set up correctly. The guide contains a series of steps to take to pinpoint the problem and steps to fix it. It also contains a bit of technical background and a list of information we will need should your particular problem not be covered.

Also, the latest non-broken version (87) has problems using UPnP, and must use port forwarding.

Yeah I followed that FAQ up and down. No luck. Are you suggesting maybe going to an older version and see if the UPnP would be better served since I can't get the port forwarding to work for whatever reason? Also is there anything special I have to do on the client side or is it just like any other program?

Well, if you followed it up and down, you must have read the part that says '...and tell the people at the forum which step was the first that doesn't work', right?

The only client setup is to make sure Java is allowed to access the network.

First and foremost... thanks for not being helpful. Second I did, but it doesn't mean that something else might have come up. I am just being thorough since clearly the FAQ didn't help in my case. Now, if someone has something constructive to say I am all ears.

Step-by-Step Problem Diagnosis (SSPD)
... If you head to the forums and don't have the answers to the questions asked by these steps, you'll be directed here and told to start at Step 1 and progress through them until a step fails. Some steps may not apply to your situation and you can skip them. ... Be prepared to identify which steps you skipped and why you skipped them when you post on the forum. ... These steps must be done in the order presented here or the results are meaningless

Heh-heh. Why is it when new users are pointed to directions that explicitly indicate what to do, that they feel it's the community that is being "unhelpful"? Don't they realize that we would love to help them use the tool -- that's why we're here, after all!

And the comedian in me just can't resist this one:

You're welcome for being helpless.
