Networking problem with Java 8/Maptools b91
I'm having trouble searching the forums for Java 8 networking related problems (the 8 is ignored and Java shows up in every other post).
Here is my set up:
Desktop Maptools b91, Java 1.8.0_31
Netbook Maptools b91, Java 1.7.0_60
on the same (local, in-house) network.
Players in Maryland/DC using their own machines.
I can start the server and operate normally on the Netbook, but no one can connect to the server if the Desktop starts the server.
The Desktop can connect to the Netbook and the players can connect to the Netbook, but no one can connect to the Desktop.
Should I remove and reinstall Java 8 on the Desktop or should I just install Java 7 on the Desktop and see if that corrects things?
Thanks,
Toby

absolutely sure no firewall is blocking the port or something similar?
Re: Networking problem with Java 8/Maptools b91
If so, it's only a problem on one PC. The Desktop and Netbook are on the same LAN. One connected by wire (Desktop), one connected wirelessly (Netbook). They both use the same antivirus (microsoft) program.
How would I look for security settings or other software firewall on the computer?

Sounds like a permissions issue on the desktop.Toby wrote:Should I remove and reinstall Java 8 on the Desktop or should I just install Java 7 on the Desktop and see if that corrects things?
The easiest fix would be to:
1) Uninstall Java 8 (actually, all java's if you have others on the same computer) and reinstall it. Make sure you get the 64 BIT version if you're using a 64 bit OS: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
2) Reinstall Maptool, too.
Be sure to accept any permissions either may ask for.
Maptool is the Millennium Falcon of VTT's -- "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

OK, well at least it's not an incompatibility problem with Java 8. I'll reinstall and report back.

Since you fixed it, this may be a non-issue, but I don't see how you could have your desktop and netbook on the same network and *not* only be able to use one of the two as the server. Your router will assign a different local IP to each computer on the network, and you can set the port forwarding for one of those two IPs, but not both. Or at least, if there is a way around that, I don't know what it is. Whenever I host a server, I always have to make sure that the port forwarding setting is applied to the local IP of whatever computer I am using at the time.Toby wrote:If so, it's only a problem on one PC. Turns out it wasn't actually fixed. I was able to connect via LAN, but my players offsite weren't able to connect. We fiddled with the port settings, the router firewall settings, but the desktop was never able to allow outside connections.
I'm going back to Java 7 for the next session. Unfortunately, the next session won't be for a month. I'll update everyone then.

I really appreciate the offer. I probably wont have time to do that until my near my game time.
Thank you,

Re: Networking problem with Java 8/Maptools b91
We did a test last night. I installed Java 7 Build 76 and set my Maptools batch files to point to Java 7 instead of Java 8 build 40. My players were able to connect without any special problems to my server.
Maptools version 1.3_b91, Windows 7.
Make of that what you will. If anyone would like more information, please let me know.
