Java 8 Update and failure to load cmpgn file

Post by Cavalius »

I am pretty new to this program. I started using it before updating my java. The program worked fine until I updated. After updating from Java 6 to Java 8, the program says my cmpgn file cannot be opened. Is there a fix for this, or am I going to have to start my campaign file anew?

If it was working before with Java 6, which version of Maptool were you running?

I did not change the version of map tools. I only upgraded Java. The version of Maptool I am running is 1.3.b84.

looks like a file corruption.... you can have a look in your .maptool folder (usually c:\users\myName\.maptool) to see if there are any older or backup saves. You can also unzip the file (its zip) to see if it extracts at all.

Out of curiosity... if you're pretty new to Maptool, why are you using a 5 year old version?

b84 might have some issues with Java 8...

I suggest that you upgrade to 1.4.0.5.

Don't know if that will fix your campaign issue, but I do suggest you use a newer version of MT with Java 8.

I do not believe that 1.3 versions of Maptool will work with Java 8. Pretty sure that version needs Java 6 as it is very old.

Only 1.4 use Java 8

That did the trick. Not sure why, but I could run the program, I just couldn't save a campaign and be able to load it again. Now all I have to do is convince my group to re-download the latest version. The only reason I went with the older version is because I read all the troubles people were having installing. I went with the last version in the Launch area, because that seemed easiest.

Thanks for the help. It is appreciated.

Just for additional encouragement, my group also used b84 at some point in the past but are now on 1.4 and we are still using the same framework (Rumbles Slim) without issue :)

Join the 1.4 train! I think you'll love all the improvements we're making! We really strive to make everything backward compatible. If you run into issue running the older framework, let us know. All your macros should work just fine.
