Well, lets get back to basics. What you are calling "Dim" & "Bright" light are just "colors" of light. That's all MT can represent. And it does a mediocre job of combining those colors when they overlap.

So MT can not behind the scenes say "this light is bright and overlaps this dim light and makes it bright light. And this over here is dark so it only goes up one level to dim light". It can only say "take color xyz with alpha 100 and blend it with color abc with alpha 75" and display it. What the end results 'means' is up to your human eye to determine.

With a single light source, it's sort of easier to tell, but once you start throwing in torches, darkvision, moon light, campfire, and a light spell, it gets a little complicated on what lighting a given token is really in.
