REQUEST: Community Sample Map Room

Post by Dracorat »

Could someone be so kind to provide a small but good lookin room for the community to use whenever they need to detail new ideas, new drawings etc?

Preferrably in 40-pixel and 80-pixel size. It doesn't have to be complex, but I am failing horridly at trying to fill this request myself. (Mostly because I think my artistic talent rivals that of fingerpainting)

Thanks.

Oh and I should mention - if you do it in Photoshop, please make the layered PSD file available.

This came up because I made a pattern I would like to show off but I need a good room to use as an example. It struck me that there should be such a room for any time anyone has these wild inspirations in order to illustrate their inspiration.

I am kinda lost what you are asking really.

Can you provide more detail?

There are a ton of maps here: http://www.dundjinni.com/forums/forum_topics.asp?FID=6

Plus take a look at www.rpgmapshare.com and our boards for maps - I know I have made a few buildings as have others.

It comes down to this:

I don't want to take something someone else has done from a gallery or something in an effort to illustrate something and then have people make comments about the underlying image. (Since that isn't the reason I would do such a thing)

Instead, if we had just a basic image with maybe a small room, a couple of squares of hallway leading out and nothing too fancy, but it was used any time something came up for generic illustration, then people would understand the room is simply the room.

That's what =)

I quickly made this for you - is this what you had in mind?

Looks pretty good. Can we have a couple doors and perhaps a few items inside too?

I am still working on one myself. Perhaps we could create a series of sample images. People could just call out that they used one.

OK, here is the one I worked on.

It also shows why I originally thought up this idea and I'm sure it will come in handy for others.

First, the room:

Now, what I was working on...

See the squares? They have a sort of 'cut out' drop shadow on them.

I made that drop shadow in a 40-pixel and an 80-pixel size. (I use 80 pixel sized maps when I can because I like detail when you zoom in, even though it eats 4 times the memory).

Here is the zip:

In Photoshop, perform this once:
Open the file for the size you need, then go to EDIT --> DEFINE PATTERN.
Give it a name.

Then, when you need to use that pattern on a drawing in the future, create a layer, select the bucket-fill tool and then for the fill type, select PATTERN. Choose the pattern you defined and bucket fill the layer. Change the opacity and you are good to go.

NOTE: I made these darker than I expect you to use practically. In the sample image above, that layer is set to ten percent opacity. I made them dark because some of Photoshop's layer blending modes work better with high contrast images.

How do you guys do that?

It looks so professional.

Mine look like badly done blueprints.

In mine, I only really did the walls and floors. The room features (including the blood) I downloaded.

And the grids line up perfectly! Great job!

That is one of the hardest things to do sometimes when making floor tiles that are shaped like a grid.
