Frames

Post by simonutp »

After an intensive use of MapTool (Praise it!) with full square tokens (because I began to play with papet tokens), I realized that round tokens have a tremendous advantage : the spell templates are now cleary visible.

Thus I began to translate my square tokens to round ones using TokenTool, but the frames are not completely satisfaying: I would rather have them smaller (say 4 pixels for a 100 pix token) and the same size for large or small ones.
Thus I would like to create and share these kind of frames :
- 100pix diameter, with 4pix wide frame
- 200pix diameter, with 4pix wide frame
- etc...
This way the Large size token should be created large and have a frame the same size of the Medium ones on screen.

I only have one problem : my first tries with photoshop are ugly compared to the ones in TokenTool !

Can some give me a hint on how to make good ones?

Yeah, everyone seems to have thier own favorite style of frames. :)

I quickly made up a Photoshop screencast - I didn't narrate it or anything but it should give you an idea of how I approach it. There are many ways to do things in PS so there really isn't a right or wrong way to do it. This is my method:

(oh, is case you are wondering, I cut the center out by hitting the delete key and I got to the bevel setting by double clicking on the layer)

Feel free to post your work! We all love different frame options from the community! :)

I also have some tokens I made here:

Check them out if you like. They include the PSDs too.

Thank you very much for your quick responses.
I am making tests and will post the results when finished, but with wife, work and kids it may take days...

Here are the first results with my custom frames, 3 pixels wide:
Image

I am not totally satisfied.
The width of the frame should be increased a little with each size of token, maybe something like :
taille M : bordure 4pixels (actuelle : 3pix)
taille G : bordure 5pixels (actuelle : 3pix)
taille TG : bordure 6pixels (actuelle : 3pix)
taille C : bordure 7pixels (actuelle : 3pix)

Here is the diameter 100pixels, width 3pixels Frame:

Here is the diameter 200pixels, width 3pixels Frame:

It was difficult to make really smooth circles with the Dorpond method, I used vectorial shapes in PS but its still not as clean as the ones provided with TokenTool.

Now back to work...
