MapTool always has two main versions at any given time: the development version, and the release version.
The development version is where new features are added and the community tests them. Right this minute, 100% of the MapTool servers that register with the RPTools web site are using a development version. (More statistics below.)
Yet some folks don't need some of the latest-and-greatest features so they may prefer something a little older. The advantages to having an older version is that any problems or issues are likely to be well-known and have solutions available here on the forums. The disadvantage is that because such a large portion of the community uses the latest development version, you may find that answers to many questions will include, "upgrade to the latest version".
As of right now (February 2010) here is the current situation:
MapTool 1.2 (the current release version)
MapTool 1.3b63 (the current development version; the "b" means "build"; release candidate)
You may find people running builds in the 1.3 series other than b63. Maybe they are using some feature that was made obsolete by a later version and was taken out. Or perhaps they have campaign files created in an older version that can't be read by the newer versions so they stick with the older one.
Right now there are 39 servers registered and 29 of them are running 1.3b63; none of them are older than 1.3b55. There are no registered servers running 1.2 right now. The server list is constantly being refreshed (at least once every 7 minutes), so those statistics will change over time. You can check for yourself by visiting the registered servers list.
Which version of MapTool should I use?
Please post questions that you think belong here in the parent forum for discussion first. Then use the "Report this Post" function to alert a moderator that the post/thread should be moved. Common thread examples should not include macro programming, but rather user interface issues or usability issues.
