I somehow missed this one as well but that's not surprising. I'm 43, married with one son. Due to the time constraints of being husband, father and techno-servant I'm beginning a wraith-like fade from the world of gaming as reality takes over my spare time. Perhaps in a few years, when life gets simpler I can rejoin. My job requires I travel ever so often. On those trips I work on a novel that will never see the light of day.

I'm 43 and began gaming back in '76. I played just about everything TSR put out and dabbled in Warhammer 40K and a large number of other game systems. Unfortunately, the Warhammer method of selling overpriced books spread to other systems and I eventually gave up trying to game.

When SRD came out I decided to try gaming again with my buds who were spread out over the US. Maptool was our vehicle. While I don't game much anymore, I still try to support maptool with testing from time to time and try, in vain usually, to keep track of the changes.

In work-land, I'm defined as a Sr. Infrastructure Specialist in databases and middle-tier application servers. In reality, I move things... big things requiring techno-cranes.

Being that I'm new to the forum, and have hardly posted, I hope nobody minds me jumping in too...

I got started in AD&D back in '82 in high school when a friend informed me of "this awesome new game you've got to try" and I was hooked. I played through high school and college but got distracted by the finer sex. Plus, being in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M is supposed to be manly... and they frowned on my geeky habits. I ended up dropping the game for awhile. I joined the Air Force as an officer and found that I was supposed to have "higher standards" so I had to keep my interests low key. That made it really hard to find anyone to play with. About 5 years ago... I was sitting around during a huge storm up in northern Greenland when some friends started talking about "3.0". Of course... I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about... but I quickly got interested and hooked again. I've been playing off and on since then because I still find it hard to find active groups in my age range.

Personal stuff: married to a wonderful woman who has provided me with two beautiful kids, my daughter -16, and my son -10. My background is nuclear operations and I am currently a duck out of water at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma (yeah... I can't figure it out either.) I have limited programming experience... meaning I stopped at C+ back in '87 and am pretty much baffled by most of the new stuff... even basic scripting has me confused. And... although I'm interested in learning... I have absolutely no idea where to start learning again.

Mostly... I just hang around like a shadow on forums and learned about MT from the DMGenie forums. For some reason... maybe the fact that this product rocks and the people are so friendly... I decided to become more active.

That said... thanks for the warm welcome and your support of the "uninformed."

Hi all

I'm Claus, a 38 yo psychologist and gamer of 20 years an' a bit, hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Europe.

Started RPGing in ... '87 was it? 86?... high school, anyhow ;-). Back then RPG's were a brand new thing 'round here, and choices were OCD ... sorry OD&D (soon followed by ADD ... oops, AD&D) and what's now known as Classic Traveller, so I cut my teeth on those.

As a GM I soon grew weary of the D&D mind- and toolset (no disrespect implied here!!! Lot's o' poeple have fun with D&D, but - tastes just differ), and a couple of systems down the road I found myself on a blind date with a gal called GURPS - we clicked instantly and were soon bound in an exclusive marriage, that has lasted to this day. Haven't GM'ed through any other systems lens since (have done xD&D to death as a player, though, as most other GM's in our group ... OK, THE other GM in our group ... is as mad a fanboy for D&D as I am for GURPS, so - none of us ever get to PLAY in our favourite systems :( ;) ).

A couple of years ago I began noticing all these VTT systems, and have been playing around ever since (though only getting serious the last couple of months). It's beginning to look like MapTools will be my love in this department, as there is just no contest for price vs. capabilities - it's a lovely job done :D

Somehow I missed this thread too.

34 yrs old. Rocket Scientist working for Caltech at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena CA. Married to gamer wife (Also a Rocket Scientist - she worked on the MER Rovers Spirit and Opportunity currently on Mars. She also "flew" the Cassini spacecraft around Saturn). 1 boy, 10 months old.

Currently in Flight Project IT and working on MSL, the next Mars Rover.

Played D&D since 3rd grade, when I was a DM! Have a game going on at the office every 2 weeks - home-brew plot connecting all my old 1st edition modules (updated to 3.5).

Wow, that is SO cool! I always wanted to be involved with space at some level but never took that path in life. Very cool you are actually working on stuff that will visit other planets! Very cool!

I can actually say I know a rocket scientist now! :)

PS. So was the moon landing really a conspiracy? I bet you and your friends have discussed it at some time or another.

Well,
The real story on that is when ------------ and----------- - --------------------- ------------------- ------------- -----------. We coudn't believe ----------- ------------------ ------------------------ ------ or that ---- --------- ------------- . ------------------ -- -------- ------------- --------- from outer space. That way no one would --------------- ------------------- ------------ ------------------ - - ----- ----------- - - -------- today.

And now you know the real story.

Wow, Stefam, that is pretty cool. I was one of the "liitle" space guys. I spent a year in northern Greenland running a remote tracking station for polar orbiting satellites. You know, the ______ ones. Most of the guys I met all worked on local stuff, mostly ISR, comm or weather. "Outer" space always seemed fantastical to me. It's interesting to meet someone who actually works... um... I was going to say "there" but maybe "in relation to" is a better choice.

WOW! You must be talking about Thule!

I flew to Thule on the 'once per week' plane that flies to Greenland to entertain the troops on base. It was a 3 week DOD tour. I have to say, I absolutely loved it up there. The people on base were fantastic and boy, one night the guys ambushed me with Dansih Potatos (I woke up around 5PM the next day) during our show. Let's just say it was one hell of a party! ;)

I loved the billiards - that was VERY fun with the pins and all. They really deck it out up there for you guys; a casino, bowling, gym - like a mini city in the middle of nowhere. I liked it very much but then again, I could leave after 3 weeks.

I thought it was totally cool seeing the locals building igloos on the weekends. I tried to play a song out there for them but I only got 1/4 of the way through the song before my fingers were no longer functional due to the cold.

The military folk gave me a tour of the room where you guys looked at radar blips and such looking for space activity. They showed me the radar and explained what each blip was - it was cool. I learned how important Thule was for national security that day.

When were you there? Maybe it was you who gave me the tour :)
I am trying to remember the dates of the tour -I will have to dig up my box of memories and try to find the date. If I were to guess it was in 1997 or so. The name of the band was called The New York Rockin' Rodeo Band (high energy country band). Ring a bell Greenman?

Yeah... it was Thule. I was there from 2001-2002. Ah... the parties... but don't let my wife know. It is like a little city there... except for the fact that there are no paved roads and no where to go even if there were. They do put alot of effort into making it nice... but you really had three choices: work out, eat or drink. Basically, after a year you could leave as a hunk, a chunk or a drunk. I was a drunk chunk...

The highlight of my year there was completing my goal of drinking a beer on every mountain surrounding the base...

I had a lot of fun, though. I went panning for gold... didn't find any... went garnet hunting and almost broke my arm, but I got a huge bag of garnets (that I've done nothing with), and went hiking up on the polar ice cap and had a snow ball fight (I guess there aren't many people that can say that). I did come in second in a dog sled race which would've been real cool except for the fact that the inuits feed their dogs a very fat-rich diet... and they constantly have the runs... even when pulling a sled. Yuck... I'm glad you had fun up there... and I remember fondly having bands come in... You guys always made a regular night into something special.

I'm sure you remember that no one even showed up to the club until 10 or 11 and it would shut down around 5 or 6 am so everyone could either move to another party or go find some breakfast... Well... most nights anyway. Sun through Wed it usually shut down around 2am. The "flattop" parties after the club closed were usually the best.

Were you up there during the winter or the summer? Meaning... was it dark for 24 hours or did you get to enjoy the experience of telling the time at night by what mountain the sun was circling over?

There was daylight when I went there so I got to see some cool things. One day we saw a bunch of tents on the ocean so we hiked out there. Come to find there was a military group out there who were on a mission for a full month (1 month in tent in VERY cold weather is very impressive). They cut a hole in the ocean ice and would swim down to retrieve submarine missiles that missed their target. I guess they float up under the ice. They make them neutral buoyant, swim them to the hole and drag them out. They told us a missile is has the rough value 1 million dollars each

To make a long story short, their reverse osmosis machine went down and they had to get ice pieces from the nearest glacier. They brought the ice in a sled and they said the ice is over a million years old. I grabbed a chunk and melted it down to take home. I still have the glacier water on my shelf - not many people can say they have 1 million year old water. ;)

Fun times - fun times :)
