LED Monitor Alternatives

Hi there. I have seen a number of ideas for projector and the like but I was curious if anyone has recently researched LED displays, placed flat up, either with or without minis.
LED TVs are not too expensive and you could probably even set up a lightweight frame for under the cost of a projector. You may even be able to avoid extra layering on the surface if you did not marker draw, used pogs, etc etc.
Has anyone worked on a decent setup using an LED monitor like this?
