So last game I had my party face a Dentinal armed with a shotcannon, which they held in melee the whole fight and put it down.

Wasn't sure about one thing. Normally a character on melee can't use heavy weapons but a walker isnt a normal character, so can they shoot normally even when an enemy is in melee with it?

the rules are fairly clear on this one, only pistols in melee. so no.

Yea for charavcters on foot. But can vehicles engauge in melee the same way? I couldnt see any disenguage rules for vehicles which seems like handing over a death certificate to the party. Seems a little odd, but then there are parts that make sense. Oh sigh

Ah vehicles. Yes that's another matter, it's not well documented in DH but it is in only war and the beta. Unfortunately I'm not yet familiar with those rules. I'd suggest posting on the ffg forums
