Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
Hi all,
I need answers really quick
If someone were to contribute art assets for tokens to the community, but only had time to provide it in one size, what size would it ideally be? 64x64, 32x32, etc?
I'm not yet sure if its scalable in nature, hence the question.
Thank you!

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
Well the most art provided is in three px sizes 50, 100 and 200. If you're talking about single tokens then I would say 100px size. Or considering the token tool 128x128

Great! 128x128 was on the table. It's not scalable, but hi-res, so I guess the more pixels in it the better.

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
I say anywhere between 200x200 to 400x400. I like having detailed high resolution images for my PCs and monsters. 256 is the max token tool size though.

But that has quite an impact on the gameplay as it uses a lot of memory.aliasmask wrote:I say anywhere between 200x200 to 400x400. I like having detailed high resolution images for my PCs and monsters. 256 is the max token tool size though.

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
It's never bothered my gameplay and I use huge maps and 100px grid. All my tokens are 400x400, but the map objects vary. I find having lots of detailed vbl to have the biggest performance impact. Although, a bunch of small objects resized manually from a large image does have an impact. I don't know if it the image or because it has been manually resized. I do try to place objects in the background image when I can. My latest map is 1750x2550 for 50px grid. 100px would have pushed the boundaries of the memory on my editor, so I played it safe. A 200x200 png image is about 90k, 250k for 400x400. If you have 40 different tokens on map, that would be 10megs, well below the 1 gig for resident memory. I don't usually have 40 different tokens of that size on my maps.wolph42 wrote:But that has quite an impact on the gameplay as it uses a lot of memory.aliasmask wrote:I say anywhere between 200x200 to 400x400. Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
Yes, but when used as player tokens they have to be pushed around all clients, which takes up quite some bandwith.

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
I'd rate resolution for tokens/objects in this range:
High: 200x200
Medium: 100x100
Low: 50x50
My preference is for 200x200 at HD resolution.
But, that said, with 4K TV monitors just around the corner even 200x200 is going to be pretty small.

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
FYI Bigger is better. You can always batch script and reduce resolution but not the otherway around. I find 256x256 best/min for my setup. With machine setups these days, memory isn't a problem for most (or network).
Anything less than 200x200 looks block'y on a 50" TV when moderately zoomed in.

Cool. I know I've read it somewhere here sometime before, but wasn't there a discussion on scalable/vector graphics?

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
Searching for "SVG" turns up a few things. I'm not sure whether that includes what you are looking for.

Re: Quick question: Ideal native size for image assets
About SVG I recall three main points
a) it would be good to have
b) there is very few vector based art around, so pixel based should be supported anyway
c) IIRC there were problems with the realization (not sure what or if, but its in my mind somehow)
