The Slow Down issue

Post by trevor »

It's become quite a nusance, so I'm making it top priority. It appeared within the last two months or so, so I'm going to create some automated tests to try and capture it, then slowly move back in time until I find it.

Bear with us, we'll get it back up to its regular rock solid state :) Any information you can find, such as a sure fire way to reproduce it (which feature) would be very useful. Thanks !

So I'm pretty sure it isn't the networking code. And it seems fairly random since multiple clients connected to the same server, some clients will slow down while others won't.

In any case, this weekend is lag death day !

Giliath and crew did some testing during their campaign last night and found some interesting details.

It's definitely not network related and seems definitely related to rendering the map.

It's possible that it's graphics driver related. I'm thinking that I might have neglected to clean up some video memory somewhere that's adding up in video memory, and some graphics boards can clean them up while others can't.

I don't know that for certain but it certainly seems feasible. I'm going to comb the code for dangling resources.

The unfortunate part is that I may never be able to repro it on my hardware, so the only thing I can do is read the code, patch anything I find, then post a build for you guys to bang on and see if it's fixed or not :P

So, I'm going to be relying on you guys to help us solve this one !

If you have some sort of test you'd like me to try we're having a game this weekend and one of the slow guys will be gaming again.

I've probably got the slowest hardware so I'd be a good test bed.

Hopefully I'll be able to find something and make a build before then so you can see if you still hit it.

OK, during development tonight, I finally hit the lag issue personally. I've been able to reproduce it somewhat.

So, I've at least got my finger on it, now just gotta sqqquuuuuuuuiiiiish !

Ok, just published a new build. Please bang on it to verify the lag has been fixed.

I ran MT for 6 hrs on Saturday with multiple maps and around 10-15 tokens on 3 pcs on a wireless LAN and did not have any slowdown during our session.

Very nice.
