I thought I would start making tutorials for making maps in Photoshop.

This first tutorial is how to make platforms, stairs and corner shadows to make those stairs look a bit more realistic.

To answer your question: No

Just open up your favorite seamless textures in photoshop and then go to Edit -> Define Pattern

Now your texture will be in Photoshop.

I guess I need a tutorial on seamless texture creation. sigh... I'm such a newb at this stuff.

btw, two things I noticed: (Being that I make Web graphics in photoshop I do pick things up here and there =P )

1) When you do the select inverse and erase around the edges, you could have just done a EDIT -> CLEAR (or pressed the DELETE key)

2) when you do the corners and then pant it in, I'm surprised you didn't just bucket fill it. To make bucket fill work properly after using the brush tool, just set the brush tool and the bucket fill to "antialias edges" set to off.

Great advice Dracorat! I hope we can all share more secrets from these.

Regarding the bucket fill: Since I went to Photoshop 9 I have had bad luck filling with anti-aliasing. It just doesn't listen and always leaves a thin line around the edge. I never had that problem with previous versions of PS though. So I find it less frustrating by just drawing it in with a brush. If you have any ideas, let me know. I tried anything including the tolerance. *shrug*

Turn anti-aliasing "off" for the brush and the resultant bucket fill and you wont get the thin line

I just opened Photoshop up, an "aliased" (opposite of anti-aliased) brush is the pencil tool lol.

Draw the edges with the pencil tool then fill it and enjoy.

Hell while I'm on a roll try this also - change your "color" palette on the right to "Swatches"

Makes selecting black, white, and other primitive colors easier.
