Post subject: 3.5/PF FW gurus. How do players edit characters themselves?
PostPosted: Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:18 am
Hi folks.
I've just started to use MT and I'm very excited.
I'm very close to being able to run a 3.5 game for my (now extremely distant) RL group, for which I am extremely thankful, btw :D

I've hit a snag though, and I'm sure I can't be the first or only one so please feel free to laugh at my no0bliness  if this has been answered elsewhere (but I'm posting 'cos I couldn't find an answer). I'm hoping some caped-crusader-type will swoop in with a witty one-liner and save my day.

Here's my problem: as GM I can use the MT1.3.86_03_DnD35_Pathfinder.cmpgn campaign macro Edit Char to edit just about all the character details I need to run the attacks, saves macros etc. I can copy these campaign macros right onto the NPC and PC tokens and they work great...except...

When I copy the Edit Char campaign macro onto either global or a token (and with only that character token selected) it reports:
Code:
You do not have permission to access another token in the "getPropertyType" function.

So, I'd like my players to have charge of their own character sheets but this macro isn't working for us.

Is there another method for players to manage their own characters?
Or (entirely possible) am I missing something obvious?

Many many thanks to all of you who've worked on the excellent Map Tools, and anyone who took the time to read this far :D

I think if you drag a macro to a token or global it changes the Allow player to edit. Make sure that is off.

Why drag the macro onto a token? If the particular macro is changed in a update the token will not work or at worst mess up the token. Just leave it on the campaign frame make sure you select the check box when starting a server to propagate campaign macros. Then any character can use the macro on a token they own.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

When I posted I hadn't found the 'Players Receive Campaign Macros' checkbox on starting a server, so I thought my players were unable to use the campaign macros unless I moved them.

Attacks etc. need to be customised but yes, I can leave this macro where it is. Problem solved.
See, I knew you'd sort out my blind-spot quick-smart.

Thanks again. (that's my impressed face, for the community and the whole deal here)

Follow-up question from curiosity alone: is there a reason this macro in particular can only run from the campaign window?

It's all about trust, but it does NOT require to be on the Campaign window. I could be on each player token if you want, but then you have to make sure the chain of trust in the entire macro calls stays intact. As AM said, you would likely just have to modify the "player copy" of the macro to make sure "Players can edit' is OFF(not very trustworthy if the players can modify the macro now is it?) In essence, it has to do with how macros are written and run, so in the future, unless you want to get into the nitty gritty details, just follow the same conventions as the framework author used and you should be ok. Branch out and you suddenly have to start thinking about this sort of thing.

I save all my Campaign Files to DropBox. Not only can I access a campaign file from pretty much any OS that will run Maptool(Win,OSX, linux), but each file is versioned, so if something goes crazy wild, I can always roll back to a previous version of the same file.

Get your Dropbox 2GB via my referral link, and as a bonus, I get an extra 250 MB of space. Even if you don't don't use my link, I still enthusiastically recommend Dropbox..
