Plo's Mini-Pic Top-Down Extravaganza

Post by plothos »

EDIT: Now taking requests. I have all of the first 14 or 15 sets of WotC minis, and many of the newer ones as well. If there's a mini you'd like to see in top-down form, let me know. (Weapon changes are possible too, thanks to GIMP.)

The examples in this firs post aren't the best - they're good at certain angles but look funny rotated different ways. See below for improved examples.

pretty good.
Will have to have a play around with em, see how they can be improved. Don't be surprised if you see them pop up in Arcanoth xD

They come out pretty nice, but they don't rotate all that well. I'm trying to get a more straight down angle, but it often is not a great angle on the figure to allow you to see what it is.

Work in progress (one of many). :?

A Mage.
What's great about gimp is this guys staff-hand and sleeve were poorly painted and nearly white. But thanks to the eyedropper and some overlay fills it looks like WotC quality control improved. :D

EDIT:
Added a crossbow. And Added a string to the bow.

I see you gimped it in.

But it should be a drawn string back to his right hand. I find that a white string with about 80% transparency usually looks pretty good on most backgrounds.

Btw, you're getting better at these as you do them. The Behir looks really good.

I do have a suggestion that you might want to try out though. Your shadows are getting better, but I suspect that the black bases on the tokens is causing trouble. If you take a piece of white paper, cut a slit in it and slide the mini into it (base below the paper) you'll get an image that's easier to edit out the black bases. Then you can apply a drop-shadow with gimp and it won't be so dark.

Keep a couple odd shapes of paper around and you can quickly mask out some black pieces that show through. Of course you don't want to spend all day masking out the base, but a little time spent doing that will save you some time in you editing software.

Alternatives:

1) You could also quickly brush on some white-out on the bases. It's non-permanent and should come off with a toothbrush after you're done taking the picture.

2) Roll out some thin white playdoh, and press it onto the black bases as necessary. You should be able to shape it pretty quickly with a toothpick and get a cleaner shot with softer, easier to remove shadows.

You think? I always saw this guy as having just fired. His bow's not very curved, his fingers are open, and there's no arrow. So I like it this way, but I can mock up another easily enough. I thought about a lighter color and wound up just going with about 50% transparency. Didn't mess around with it too long. Heh.

I did read that tip on the white paper somewhere before already, and had it in mind. But I didn't really feel like messing with it. The bases really aren't giving too much trouble. I could do a better job, or do more of these. With like 1000 minis to choose from, I've initially leaned towards quantity. :D
