Post subject: Opening MapTool with Windows 7
PostPosted: Wed Sep 16, 2009 8:19 pm
I'm currently working off a machine with Windows 7 in bootcamp. I'd really like to be able to run maptools on this side instead of the mac side so that I can make use of the Character Builder. I've checked, and java is installed and working properly.

The problem is I can't open maptools. Oh, the system says it's on in Task Manager when I look at the processes, but I cannot launch from either the launcher or the bat files. I've tried searching for Windows 7 on the search function - except someone decided that a currently in testing and potentially major operating system's name shouldn't be searched for - since the search decides to ignore the "7" even when "Windows 7" is specifically searched for and instead giving 184 pages worth of posts that contain the word "Windows".

So, I suppose, what could be the problem here?

likely, it or java isnt set up for windows 7 user access controls, which will ask, everytime you run it, if you trust it. it's possible that maptools is partially open when it does this though, so that instead of seeing the window, it get's open "along side" maptools itself, so it will appear to hang, check on your taskbar bottom thing and click and see if theres another window open with it

I'm not sure what I have to fiddle with. I've tried completely turning off the firewall. I've also verified online that my Java is in fact installed and working properly.

Open up a Command Prompt and type in "java -version". See if it works.

MapTool runs fine for me under Windows 7. I don't recall if Java has the same install issues under Win7 as it did with Vista.

I'm running Win7 64-bit, I have both 32-bit and 64-bit Java installed, all the tools work perfectly for me.

I would do exactly what Phergus suggests. You probably need to set your environment variables to point to where Java is -- which is very simple.

Let us know what you get when you do what Phergus suggested.

I ran Maptool on Windows 7 without a problem.

Also, did you know there is a 32 bit and 64 bit version of Java? If you are running 64bit Windows 7, you may want to go to the start menu and run IE (64 bit), then go to java's download page and have it identify what you need to download and install. Might help, not sure. I to be honest with you, I am not sure what is expected of the java user base out there - are we supposed to install both the 64 bit version and the 32 bit versions of Java if we are running a 64 bit OS? Not sure - I think I installed both the day I got this.

What I find odd is that if I click on the IE icon in Windows, the default is 32 bit. Why stuff the 64 bit deep in the start menu?? (talking Vista 64 atm)

Good luck!

Not to derail the thread, but I'm having problems getting players to connect to my server when I'm running in Windows 7x64. Just gives them the "Connecting" message forever.

No problems when I boot into Vistax32. Anythings I can look for that might be wrong?

I wish I could offer some assistance.

I installed and run MT on a Windows 7 laptop with no problems (either launching or connecting to a server).

I would guess a 64-bit component that either (a) doesnt work properly, or (b) doesn't work the way the Java virtual machine expects it to.

Since you're not getting a completed network connection, I'd guess something in the network stack.

I just tried connecting over LAN on the same machine, and no problem. It's just when I try to go through my external IP that I have the problem.

My internal IP is the same for Vista and Windows 7, so forwarding shouldn't be the issue, and I can connect to myself through the Maptools dialog when I'm in Vista.

Um, read the Networking FAQ. It is not expected that you will be able to connect to yourself using your external IP address.
