Someone was planning a factotum unless they changed their mind.
As for summoning, it's the fact that druids can do everything that they do (full casting, wild shape, animal companion) and be able to spontaneously convert any spell to a summon that makes them nice; I tend to value flexibility/options in 3.5 in a wide open campaign, vs say a dungeon crawl. The druid can prep the slots for other things and instantly convert them to summons if it's needed, whereas a wizard has to dedicate that slot to a summon spell.
Not saying summoning wizard is a bad choice at all though; summon monster provides a wide variety of options/flexibility in itself so that's not a bad way to go at all.
I'm also looking forward to learning by watching you use a summon focused character creatively.
