Post subject: 2 network interfaces, windows 7 problem
PostPosted: Sat Apr 14, 2012 4:41 pm
First let me say I've read the Networking FAQ PDF and followed what I think was the proper procedure.

I have 2 network cards in my Windows 7 pc. One is using a static IP on a local network that routes out to my work router to the net. The 2nd is connected using a local network device from AT&T(dsl) that assigns the IP and uses NAT.

I've set the "order" in which network interfaces are supposed to be chosen in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" advanced to list the static IP NIC as primary (first).

When I use Maptools it shows the "local" IP as my static IP but the EXTERNAL as the dhcp/nat IP.

I can get around this problem by disabling my AT&T/dsl nic but if anyone has some suggestions on how to fix this w/o doing that I'd be grateful.

Does your work router have direct access to the internet or does it route through your DSL

Work router is a T1 to the internet yes. I have 2 connections here at home. One routes through my work T1 the other through AT&T DSL.

Disabling the DSL nic allows things to only the T1 which is where my static IP is.

Java grabs the first network it sees by default. This link gives you a couple methods to change the network binding order on windows 7. If you wish to make the home network useable, we would need to know which step in the networking FAQ was the first to fail. It is likely that you would need to change some settings on your AT&T device (likely a DSL modem/router/switch combination) to allow UPNP (generally preferred, but broken in the latest builds of Maptool) or port forwarding.

I've tried those methods actually. Neither seem to make a difference. Both methods do not force Maptools to use my external IP from the staticIP NIC.

I have used the port forwarding before but I want to be able to just tell my players the dns name/ip once and not have to update that whenever I get a new IP from the DSL router/device. I.E. somehow force maptools to utilize the static IP NIC.

It's not a huge deal just would be nice. I typically just disable the AT&T connected NIC and reboot. This makes everything work as I need for the session... just would be nice to not have to.

If you've set the network binding order and it still doesn't work, then you're out of luck. MT has no way for a user to specifically select a particular network interface -- it just asks the OS for one and the OS is (supposed to) give the one you put at the top of the list.

Note that the Java runtime may be caching the information. So you may need to set the bind order and then reboot. That way the first time Java starts up (wither MT or something else) it will see the order you set.

I've had similar problems with Firefox and Mumble doing the same thing. Even with the primary configuration set to the static IP NIC they go out/in the other. I am not sure what threshold determines when to use the "primary" interface and not to.
