* DM SESSION BEGINS
DM: (Party) Having made your way through the dungeons, you managed to rescue several of the kidnapped citizens from Brindol. However, after a grueling fight with a brood of ettercaps, you discovered that one of the citizens, Karthenix, was killed trying to escape. Now you've made your way deeper into the dungeons, where you prepare to face off against Sinruth, leader of the Red Hand, and his hexer minion.
DM: Sinruth a burly hobgoblin dressed in full plate armor towers over you and your companions, his breastplate, shoulder guards and bracers dented and scratched, caked with blood, and covered in massive spikes that appear as if they could easily gore a man. In his hand you see a sawtoothed chain that ends in a massive spiked ball, gripped in thick metal gauntlets that protect him from the chain’s blades. Sinruth himself watches you with orange amber eyes, sharp tusks jutting from a jaw twisted in rage. Like his kin, he wears necklaces of animal bone, his faded and tattered leather tunic stained with faded blood. Ivory horns jut out of his head, curling out from his shaggy crop of dark hair and proving beyond doubt that he isn't human. His eyes, amber and piercing, with narrow, slitted pupils, are constantly moving, taking in every detail as he watched the party in the room. A symbol of a red fist rests on his chest. "So," he growls in common. "The troublemakers. And now you are here, believing that you will fell the mighty Red Hand."
DM: Amongst this fight, you find youselves surrounded by menhirs that you notice that they are covered in ice. Even being adjacent to one makes you shiver uncontrollably as the cold seeps unnaturally into your bones. The menhirs are 8 feet tall and narrow and are made of a glassy obsidian.
DM: Note: Any creature that starts its turn in a square with a menhir takes 1d6 damage.

Davin: Shaking the cobwebs from his head, Davin jumps to his feat. He takes a swing at Sinruth, jumping his swinging chain, before driving his other sword deep into the Goblin's chest. Pulling it out, he ducks down, the chain smashing the column, sending debris raining down upon his head.
DM: Stumbling from the blood loss, Sinruth launches another attack, which the nimble Ranger dodges. As Davin lunges with his two swords, sparks flying into the air as Sinruth raises his chain to deflect the attack. The hobgoblin suddenly launches a massive from overhead, forcing Davin to dive to the ground as the crypt floor explodes in a shower of stone shards. With a roar, the hobgoblin swings his chains in a horizontal arc, narrowly missing the ranger as he hits the floor. The chains spin around the adjacent menhir, and Sinruth roars as he fails to bind his prey to the cold death of the stone. * DM With Davin and Loki blinded and dripping blood from multiple lacerations, only Maxkol remains in the fight. Circling each other, Sinruth's armor glistens with the blood of your comrades and his own, a puddle of red liquid pooling at his feet. He pants as he watches you, his eyes blood red with rage and desperation. Unarmed, the Hobgoblin rushes Maxkol, but the monk nimbly manages to dodge out of the way as he somersaults over the hulking hobgoblin, spinning in the air to place a kick in the warrior's back, sending him smashing into the adjacent menhir stone. The hobgoblin counterattacks, as he spins, a muscled fist suddenly driving towards for the monks chest. The monk simply catches the attack in the palm of his fist, closing his fingers over the hobgoblin's fist. Maxkol gives a small smile, and suddenly Sinruth roars in pain as the twin dragons on insides of Maxkol's forearms flare, his hands tightening their grip on the hobgoblin's fist. There is the sound of snapping bone, and Sinruth falls to his knees, roaring in pain. Closingh is eyes, Maxkol draws back his other hand, forming a rigid palm. Light begins to gather, racing down his arms to pool in the cup of his palm. Suddenly, the monk gives a shout and drives his palm straight for Sinruth's chest, sending the hobgoblin soaring through the air to slam into the adjacent menhir. The monk continues to roar, air and energy tears at the hobgoblin's armor, tearing rents in his armor that expose his skin. Maxkol suddenly reverses his motion, drawing in his breath and refocusing his key. The ambient cold energy of the room suddenly gathers, mist trailing from the menhirs to surround the Hobgoblin. Sinruth screams as his skin begins to freeze over, his blood freezing from the inside out. Soon, nothing is left but the frozen corpse of the former leader of the Red Hand, his mouth frozen open in a silent scream of pain and terror.
* DM Suddenly the monk is gone, there one moment, adjacent to the goblin hexer the next. There is a blinding flash of light as he pummels the goblin, flashes of light accompanying each strike. Bloodied and broken, the hexer cowers infront of Maxkol, pleading for mercy.
* DM Actions Maxkol?
Maxkol: Maxkol kicks the hexer's weapons weapons and implements away
Hexer: "Please...mercy...mercy...!"
Maxkol: Disarm yourself.
* DM The Hexer immediately tosses away his hexer rod, the item clattering across the floor to land a few feet away.
Maxkol: "You will tell us where the things we are looking for are at."
Davin: Davin runs up beside Maxkol, refreshed and having shaken off the effects of his wounds for now, scanning the room for any further enemies.
* DM The Hexer nods, cringing in fear as he looks at the frozen body of Sinruth in the corner...
Maxkol: After a breather, Maxkol has recovered all Encounter powers.
Loki: After a breather, Loki has recovered all Encounter powers.
Davin: After a breather, Davin has recovered all Encounter powers.
DM:
Davin: Davin moves over to Sinruth, tearing the cloth image of the red hand from his tunic, and searching him.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) As you search the body of Sinruth, you find a glass vial of a red liquid similar to the one you found earlier. You also find a gold pouch with approximately 100gp.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: "Where is the witch?"
Davin: Davin cleans his blades on a frosty piece of Sinruth's remaining tunic, sheathing his blades, before moving to stand over the cringing Hexer.
Davin: "And the priestess?"
Hexer: "Witch is upstairs...in magic circle. Near mushroom cave. Just follow center door at entrance."
* DM At the mention of the priestess, the Hexer glances uneasily at the door behind you...
Maxkol: "And the boy?"
Davin: "If you've harmed any of them retribution will be swift."
* DM The hexer gives a rasping laugh, "Maybe dead. Sinruth say Harrowzau use for spell. Say he finish soon. With Harrowzau, Red Hand become very powerful."
* DM Davin, with your mention of retribution, the Hexer suddenly looks very fearful, "You let me go now...let me leave, yes?"
Maxkol: "No. You will escort us. You will find if you try to escape, we have friends blocking the exit. You're safer with us."
* DM Maxkol, roll Insight
Maxkol: Insight check result: 26
DM: Maxkol: The Hexer seems extremely uncomfortable, even nervous. His eyes keep moving from Davin, to the adjacent door. He seems ready to bolt at a moment's notice as if in anticipation...
Maxkol: "You cannot outrun me, hexer. Do as we ask, and you will leave here alive."
Davin: Davin opens the door.
Davin: Davin opens the door, taking a look inside.
* DM HOLD
DM: Davin, as you open the door, you see a hallway that snakes to the left ahead. A warm glow of fire spills down the hallway infront of you, accompanied by a gentle sobbing.
* DM RESUME
Davin: "Keep an eye on him, I'll be right back."
Davin: Davin moves towards the source of the noise.
Davin: "He better hope I'm happy with what I find."
DM: (Davin) As you enter the room, you see that it is a crypt for someone of some importance that has been converted to a war room of sorts. A large sarcophagus dominates the room, but in the corner you see makeshift desk, a cot, and several chests scattered about the room.
Maxkol: Maxkol nods
DM: Chained to the wall and cowering behind the sarcophagi, a woman in grey robes who can only be described as exceedingly beautiful is huddled in the corner, her blue eyes like sapphires with red-gold, curly hair. With a smooth-skinned, perfectly oval face, any man would fall for her pretty, dimpled smile and full red lips. Upon closer inspection however, you see that bruises mar her face, a blood trickles from a cut lip and her clothing appears torn. As she sees you, she appears to shrink back, moving further into the recesses of the room.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin immediately rushes across the room, moving to undo the chains. "It's ok. You're safe now. We've come to rescue all of you."
* DM Davin, as you move to undo the chains, the woman flinches drawing away from you, but otherwise fails to react to your presence. Her eyes appear glazed over and she gazes straight ahead, as if in stupor.
Davin: Davin reaches out to put a comforting hand on her shoulder, before continuing to undo the chains.
* DM Davin, roll Diplomacy
Davin: Diplomacy check result: 3
* DM Undoing the chains, the woman suddenly jerks away, screaming as she claws to get away from you. She sits in the corner, sobbing, rocking back and forth in a fetal position.
Maxkol: Maxkol's ears perk as he listens to the sounds echo down the corridor
Davin: Davin stands up, hands raised. "Woah, it's ok, I'm not here to do anything to you....um...I mean....we're here...to...yeah....help."
Davin: "Hey Maxkol, I could use your help here."
* DM The woman continues to sob, drawing her torn skirts as best she can around her.
Davin: "Listen, I'm just going to put this healing potion down on the ground over here. You can just reach over and take it if you want. Ok?"
Maxkol: Maxkol grabs the creature by the back of its neck and forces it to march down the hall towards Davin.
Davin: Davin puts the postion down on the bench, before moving back and giving the woman some space.
* DM The creature groans and whimpers, struggling as you drag it behind you to the adjacent room.
Maxkol: What were you doing to this woman?
* DM HOLD
DM: (Maxkol) *passive insight* As you enter the room, you see a woman with red-gold hair curled up in the side of the room. The woman appears to have undergone severe mental trauma. As you approach and crouch down quietly to assess the woman, and notice spots of blood on the front and back sides her dress that concern you further.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: Maxkol examines the causes of these spots of blood
DM: (Maxkol) Judging by the location near the woman's waist, you would say that she was raped repeatedly.
Davin: Davin takes off his cloak, offering it to the woman with a motion, before dropping it a short distance away from the woman with the healing potion.
Davin: Davin steps back and grabs the Hexer by the back of the throat and marches him out of the room.
Davin: brusqly and rapidly
Maxkol: "What was done here was not... is not right."
Maxkol: Maxkol watches Davin leave the room, and then tries to make eye contact with the woman with austerity.
* DM The Hexer struggles, screaming as you drag him from the room, "No! Please..." His claws tear at your armor as he tries to get free.
Davin: Davin shoves him roughly, forcing him before him.
* DM Maxkol, roll Diplomacy
Davin: Davin moves back into the room with the pillars, drawing his sword and driving it up into the Hexer's kidney, before pushing him down to the freezing ground, against one of the pillars.
Maxkol: Diplomacy check result: 11
DM: (Maxkol) You feel the woman stiffen suddenly, her eyes flicking to the wall behind you. Slowly, she relaxes, and you feel her gaze drift onto you.
Davin: Davin moves back into the room with the pillars, drawing his sword and driving it up into the Hexer's kidney, before tossing him down to the freezing ground, against one of the pillars.
* DM The Hexer gurgles, blackened blood pouring from his blood before he slumps against the pillar. His skin takes on a whitish hue, flecks of blood begin to harden.
Maxkol: "You're safe with us. What's your name?"
Davin: Davin mechanically searches the Hexer, before standing from his crouch, taking a step back to spit on him.
* DM The woman seems to take an eternity to respond, and she appears to speak with a significant amount of pain, "I...I'm....Jalissa."
* DM Davin, as you search the Hexer, you find an odd wand formed of burnished metal. It is warm to the touch.
Maxkol: "I am Maxkol. You can call me Max. I see Davin left something to help with the physical pain, should you wish to ease your suffering a little."
Davin: "Here Loki. Looks like you could use this." Davin tosses it to him before he has the chance to respond, leading him to catch it with a but of a juggle.
* DM Loki catches wand, his eyes fixed on the corpse of the Hexer, "Uh...thanks..."
Davin: Davin gives the Hexer one last kick, tobbling the corpse over to lie flat. Taking a deep breath, he sheathes his sword, before more calmly walking back to rejoin Maxkol. sheathing his sword. Taking a deep breat
DM: (Davin) Reentering the room, you see that the woman has calmed down. Behind Jalissa and Maxkol you see a table scattered with papers, and two chests, one large and ancient looking, another wooden and more modern, placed in the corner of the room.
Maxkol: Maxkol will slide to sit nearby to her on the wall, cross legged, back straight and looking into the distance.
Davin: Davin stops in the doorway, watching from there for a moment, quietly, before moving over to the table, starting to search through the various papers.
* DM HOLD
DM: Davin, searching through the papers you see that they are mostly correspondence papers with another entity who refers to himself as the "Emissary"...
DM: Sinruth, Few military goods are shipped from Brindol. Most shipments are composed of food, furs, leathers and such. Farm products for the most part. Incoming shipments don't usually include finished goods, but metals & stone come from Hammerhold regularly. Those shipments are more likely to fill your needs. Look for a hammer & anvil on the guards' tabards. These shipments belong to the Blacksmiths' guild. That's all I can offer. Producing military goods is not my arena. There are human outlaws in the area too. If you could somehow ‘persuade’ them not to attack our interests, it would be worth something to me. Particularly if they were to redirect those raids to our competition. In exchange, I will put you in contact with the right people. S. T.
DM: A second letter is as follows:
DM: Sinruth, In exchange for your ‘assistance’, I have located with some effort the services you requested, though I am loath to deal with such people. I would prefer you met with this one. Seek out Modra. I have offered him 50 gold to come and listen to your proposal. The meeting is set for the new moon, two weeks from now, at our wooded rendevous place near Prosser. I'll confirm the meeting, but the negotiations are up to you. S. T.
DM: And a third...
DM: Sinruth, I do not know who or how you've garnered your target information from, but it has proven most useful. Perhaps some day you'll share your source with me. I hope the last batch of goods we sent by our little friend was well received. This arrangement has been profitable for us both. I hope we can continue in this manner. You are to accomplish the below tasks by midsummer. Our host is mobilizing soon and we must be ready for their arrival. Our brothers are preparing everywhere. Be sure that you will be properly compensated.
DM: Month 1 1 - Establish a base of operations near Brindol, but concealed from the humans. 2 - Implement defenses and any necessary security. 3 - Raid isolated farms for supplies. Leave no witnesses.
DM: Month 2: 4 - Contact all clans within 4 days travel of Brindol. Offer their leaders terms for an alliance. 5 - Recruit all that you can immediately. The spare weapons & armor should help. 6 - Recon the human military in the area, but do not engage.
DM: Month 3: 7 - Garner information about Brindol's defenses & layout. 8 - Raid smaller villages & merchant caravans for supplies, weapons, & slaves. 9 - Continue to recruit allies offering your spoils as incentive.
DM: You have done well, and continue to please me. I look forward to continuing our beneficial arrangement.
DM: The Emissary
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin rolls up the various papers, tucking them away under his armor. "Seems like someone named "The Emissary" has been giving Sinruth direction."
Davin: Davin looks up, before guiltly turning back, a bit abashed forgetting Maxkol's further attempts to calm the priestess.
* DM The priestess huddles in Davin's cloak, rising unsteadily to her feet.
Davin: Davin moves over to the chests, first examining them carefully on a knee for any tripwires or traps.
* DM Davin, roll Perception
Davin: Perception check result: 21
Maxkol: Maxkol remains seated against the wall as the girl stands.
DM: Davin, examining each chest, the locks appear to be free of any traps.
Jalissa to Davin: "You killed him."
Davin: Davin takes a glance at the priestess, making an awkward attempt at giving her a small, comforting smile, before searching the two chests.
Maxkol spends a Healing Surge and regains 7 hit points.
Davin: Davin ignores the question as he searches through their contents, focusing on the task.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) Searching the smaller chest, you find that it holds 160gp and another small bottle of potion of healing.
DM: Turning to the second chest, this one appears much older, its oak panelling covered with the symbol of the heron. As you open the chest, you see a stunning pair of armored vambraces and a short sword laying carefully placed amongst the belongings in the chest. Reinforced with longitudinal strips of hardened hide and metal, the arm bracers are composed of a leather base, which makes up the bracer at large, as well as a accent steel plate that has been fastened securely onto the base; it is on these accent plates that a silvered motif depicting a soaring heron has been cast. Each vambrace is quite ornate, composed of layered bands of to allow for greater flexibility of the wrist and forearm.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin takes the vambraces and short sword from the chest.
DM: (Davin) As you pick up the vambraces and the short sword, a quiet seems to settle over the room, as if in anticipation.
Maxkol: Maxkol listens to the girls voice as she speaks
Davin: Davin tucks the short sword in his belt, and holds the braces with a free hand, closing the chest with a very soft thud.
DM: (Maxkol) As Jalissa speaks, her voice carries a certain melody that you find enchanting. Her tall figure and long supple limbs entrance you despite her currently tattered condition. She moves with a grace that a dancer would envy, her long golden hair swaying about a finely boned face.
Maxkol: Maxkol notes her grace and wonders if she has had training at a monstary in her past.
* DM Jalissa's eyes flick to the sword and bracers you hold, and they close for a moment as if sensing something.
Davin: Davin turns to Maxkol "That boy likely does not have much time," before asking the priestess. "We need to get you to safety. Can you walk?"
* DM Jalissa's eyes open slightly as the move from you to the bracers and sword, "Yes...I think so...who are you warrior?"
Maxkol: Religion check result: 16
Maxkol: History check result: 5
DM: (Maxkol) As you see the heron motif on the blade, you know of no religious significance to the symbol of the heron, nor are you aware of any historical relevance to the emblems.
Davin: "My name is Davin Cordel. Maxkol, Loki, and I were in Brindol when Sinruth's followers attacked. We're here to rescue you and the other villagers who were taken in the raid"
Davin: "And now to put a stop to all of this."
* DM Jalissa watches you for a moment, as if seeing something more, but nods after a moment, "I...see. I will try to return to those you spoke of at the entrance. I thank you for your help."
* DM Jalissa slides your cloak off of her shoulders, offering it to Davin shyly.
Maxkol: We will make sure you get there safely.
Davin: "No, please take it. Consider it yours."
Maxkol: Maxkol stands slowly and waits for Davin
* DM Jalissa gives Davin and Maxkol a look of thanks, huddling amonst the folds of the cloak, revealed to be far to large for her small frame.
Davin: "No thanks is necessary."
Davin: Davin leads out of the room, walking directly up to Loki. "Not a word out of you, ok? Not a word."
Davin: Davin gives Loki a serious look, much more serious then he has seen to date, despite their travels.
Davin: "Here, can you tell us what you make out of these?"
Davin: Davin hands him the bracers and short sword.
* DM Loki looks surprised, and opens his mouth to speak, but closes it on seeing Davin's look. He takes the sword and bracers, turning them over in his hands.
* DM HOLD
* DM Loki's eyes open as he looks at the sword and bracers, "A heron blade! I thought these were myths! To actually find one...Davin, I think you've just found that that spirit was talking about. Only a blademaster can wield one of these swords, and he must be descended from the line of Rhestilorian noble houses. it is said they shine radiant power, the energies captured inside lending themselves to the hosts martial abilities. Simply amazing..."
* DM Loki pauses to attempt to free the sword from its ivory sheath, but struggles, veins bulging from his arms and forehead as sweat drips down his forehead.
Loki: "Damn thing is stuck..."
* DM RESUME
* DM Loki hands the sword and bracers back to Davin.
Davin: "And what of the bracers?"
Loki: "I sense the Bracers are magical, linked the sword somehow but I cant discern how."
Davin: Davin eyes the sword, his keen trained eye noting its very fine craftsmanship, before attempting to draw it from its sheath
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) As attempt to draw the sword, the herons on the motif of the suddenly glow with a bright blue light. Ghostly blue figures of a pair of cranes suddenly form in the air, flapping and spinning in the air around you. You hear the dim calls of the cranes and feel the flap of their wings in the air.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: Maxkol's eyebrow raises
* DM Loki stands stunned, completely floored.
Davin: Davin looks back at Loki with a shrug. "Who knew?"
* DM The herons continue to flap around you, their ghostly forms surrounding you in a funnel of energy...
Davin: Davin straps on the vambraces, before strapping the sheathed sword to his side.
Davin: nix
Davin: Davin draws out his pair of swords, turning to face to two spirital cranes, adopting a defensive stance.
* DM HOLD
* DM Davin, as you draw your swords, a intangible spirit suddenly forms out of the energies before you, a massive glowing heron marked sword in each hand. He silently stands before you, his posture in a guard stance. Oddly the form is identitical to that your father taught you, long ago...

* DM HOLD
DM: (All) Davin and the spirit continue to strike at each other, their blades a carefully orchestrated dance that flash in the torchlight. The cranes continue to fly around the room, their speed and energy increasing with each parry and strike. Davin himself is the epitome of concentration, sweat beading his brow yet his swords move with expert precision. He has done this dance a thousand times, each move practiced under the stern gaze of his father. A tradition passed down from father to son for generations. Known to him only as the dance, now he recognizes its true nature, the Heron-marked blade is merely a symbol of his own blademaster lineage. It is with this certainty that Davin recognizes every parry, every strike of his opponent. Here Davin counters Snake in the Grass with Cougar's Recoil, there he bats aside Twisting Leaf. The phantom warrior continues his assault, his glowing blades flashing in the firelight. Eventually, Davin spots the phantom warrior moving in for a overhead strike. Davin raises his guard to fend off the strike and spins to the left, jabbing his sword behind him in a risky reverse stroke to the opponents back. There is a slight resistance indicating success, and Davin turns to see his opponent fall to his knees, evaporating to join the mist around him.
DM: (Davin) The herons flash faster around you. Your fingers tracing the air through their form, the herons suddenly spin in the air and race towards you, slamming into you with a splash of light. You feel a presence settle over your body, orienting itself as it sifts through your mind. Finally, you feel what can only be described as a sense of alignment as the magic of the sword orients itself with its new master. You sense a dormant power settle back within the sword, waiting to rise to any challenge against its master.
* DM RESUME
DM:
Davin: Davin reaches out to absently lean against one of the pillars, absorbing what has just happened, before the sudden shock of cold lends him to shake his entire arm, bringing him instantly back to awarness
Davin: "Yow, I need to be more careful."
* DM Note: Davin is fully healed and gains back his expended healing surge
Davin: Davin starts to strap on the armored vambraces, as if he was tieing his boots, nonchalantly, as if nothing had happened.
Maxkol: Maxkol attempts to move out of his guarded stance
DM: (Maxkol) You find yourself freed from whatever force was holding you.
Maxkol: Maxkol surveys the room to see if anything else changed or anyone is missing
* DM Jalissa stands huddled in the cloak, but watches Davin with interest...
* DM Loki watches Davin's sword, "Need to get me a heron-marked blade..."
Davin: Davin straps the sword's sheath to his side, before turning towards the exit
Davin: All conditions removed.
Davin: "I'm surprised you haven't tried to blast something yet with that wand. Or at least use it to warm up your hands in here."
Davin: After a breather, Davin has recovered all Encounter powers.
Maxkol: "There is power in the relics of one's ancestors"
Davin: Davin gives Loki a playful shuddering expression, before moving towards the doorway.
Maxkol: "We should take this woman to the entrance. Red Cloak should provide her with some entertainment"
* DM Loki glances at his wand, "I'm not so sure I want to fight a spirit to use my wand..."
* DM Jalissa looks confused at the mention of a Red Cloak, but doesn't move to argue.
Davin: "Oh, I'm sure it would not be a single spirit. Maybe only the spirits of the woman you have crossed. Nothing to worry about, right?"
Davin: Davin glances over at Jalissa, forgetting she was there, before starting towards the door, back towards Red Cloak.
Loki: "I left those women highly satisfied! If anything they'd simply give me a backrub!"
Maxkol: Maxkol heads back towards the entrance
Davin: Davin opens his mouth as if to respond, but then thinks better of it.
* DM Jalissa and Loki follow...Loki pausing to admire the priestess' figure.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Party) Shepherding Jalissa back to the entrance to the crypt, you find Red Cloak, Percy, and others all gathered around a pot of stew. Red Cloak seems to be sampling the stew gingerly, pausing now and again to see if Sertanian and others are spying on his secret method.
Red Cloak: "I say Albus, a fine job here! Just the right amount of liver! I bet that hobgoblin is wishin he were on the other side now!"
* DM RESUME
* DM The Red Hood looks up as your party enters, pausing momentarily to eye Jalissa.
Maxkol: Maxkol eyes the group as he enters the room, assessing everyone's mood and morale
Davin: Davin makes his way over to the pot, kneeling down to ladel out a portion into a bowl, before bringing it over to offer to Jalissa.
Red Hood: "Where's you find a masseuse? My back's been killing me. Percy's idea of a massage is beating me with those stringy arms of his!"
Davin: "Here. You must be hungry. This will help your strength to return."
* DM Jalissa gingerly takes the bowl of stew, and begins taking small bites. Oddly, as she continues to eat, she seems to feel more and more invigorated, even rested...
Jalissa: After an extended rest, Jalissa has recovered all healing surges and all Daily and Encounter powers.
* DM Jalissa puts down her bowl, "Thank you...I feel much better."
Maxkol: Maxkol grabs some soup and sits against a wall with a smile, and eats
Davin: Davin offers Jallisa place to sit on a bedroll, before making his way back over to the group.
Maxkol: *stew
Jalissa: "If you don't mind, I'm going to get some rest..."
Maxkol: After an extended rest, Maxkol has recovered all healing surges and all Daily and Encounter powers.
Davin: "Please do."
* DM Maxkol, upon ladling yourself the stew, you are amazed not only at the taste, but the warm feeling that fills your body. By the time you're finished, you feel invigorated, as if you've had a full night's rest.
Davin: Davin makes his way back over to the group, and after a quick glance as if asking for permission, helps himself to a very large bowl
Davin: After an extended rest, Davin has recovered all healing surges and all Daily and Encounter powers.
Maxkol: Maxkol looks at Percy with a raised eyebrow and says outloud, "That is quite a meal, Albus."
* DM Davin, you feel a similar effect. The cuts and bruises no longer seem to hurt as much as they did a mere hour ago.
Davin: Davin turns to Red Hood, between hearty, famished bites. "She's the priestess that was abducted, Jalissa."
DM: (Maxkol) Turning to look at Percy, you see that he is watching Jalissa mooneyed, his mouth hanging open. He doesn't seem to hear you.
Red Hood: (frowning) "Yes, well, she certainly seems to be having an adverse effect on my faithful man-servant. I doubt my armor will be shined to an appropriate sheen with that woman around..."
Maxkol: Maxkol picks up a pebble and stealthfully flings it at the young boys jaw, while the young woman is facing away.
* DM Percy jumps in surprise, then turns to give Maxkol a guilty look before wandering over, "Sir?"
Maxkol: "I thought I saw a bug trying to fly into your mouth."
Davin: "I don't know if you've heard, but where I'm from, Overlook, flat, dull armor, is the current fashion. Plus it helps when you need to sneak up on something."
Davin: "I cannot believe the trend hasn't made it to Brindol yet. You haven't heard?"
* DM Davin, roll Bluff
Davin: Bluff check result: 8
* DM The Red Hood looks unconvinced, "I don't see how that makes any sense. If your enemies can't see your armor shining from a distance, how can they have an appropriate amount of fear?"
Davin: "I guess each to their own tactics."
Davin: "Some of us cannot strike fear into our enemies with only a glance, so we need to improvise."
Red Hood: "There's only one tactic that works every time: True Untempered Heroic VIGOR! And I've got it all in spades!"
Davin: "That you do. That you surely do."
DM: (Davin) You notice the Red Hood glance over at Jalissa to see if she's watching.
Maxkol: "Speaking of Heroism, we still have work to do Davin"
Davin: "Speaking of untempered vigor, we need to be off again. Thank you for the stew. It is quite amazing. I can see why you closely guard its secret."
Davin: Davin stands
* DM The Red Hood nods, "It is indeed a mighty secret. Passed down from the unflappable one armed midget monks of Trubador!"
Maxkol: Maxkol cleans his eating utensils and stands.
Red Hood: (Nodding to Maxkol) "Friends of yours I suppose?"
Davin: "By the way, if anyone gives her any trouble, they will have to answer to me. And unfortunately I can be quite moody," Davin quietly adds.
* DM The Red Hood nods, "I will guard her with my life, on my honor, which is quite extensive, I assure you!"
Davin: "Thank you, you are truly doing an excellent job here. Nothing has attacked us from behind since your arrival."
Maxkol: "I'm afraid I have not trained with the monks of Trubador"
Maxkol: "Which way, Davin?"
* DM The Red Hood nods, "Well then, in that case, be sure to check all of the bodies for money and jewels. Don't hesitate to slit them open from head to toe...I've heard they swallow rare gems sometimes, read about it in a book about this Conan fellow!"
Davin: Davin nods towards where they were told the boy is being held, and starts off in that direction.
DM: (All) Making your way back to the entrance to the bottom floor of the dungeon, you find yourself facing the doors, the middle of which you had previously entered.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin moves to the next doorway, opening it and peering inside.
Maxkol: Maxkol peer sinside as well
DM: )Davin) Entering the room, you see several low sarcophagi placed about the room. Each sarcophagus is set into the floor so that it protrudes only 6 inches or so. The musty smell of dead bodies fills the room, otherwise the room is empty.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin moves inside stealthily, moving left along that wall.
* DM Davin, roll Sneak
Davin: Stealth check result: 16
Maxkol: Maxkol holds back, not wanting to give away Davin's position
* DM Davin, as you sneak into the room, nothing untoward appears to happen. (Passive Perception) In the corner of the room you see some chains. They appear to have held someone earlier, judging by the torn shirt on the floor, but are now empty.
Davin: Davin kneels by the corner of the room, looking for tracks or markings to see where they may have been taken.
Davin: Nature check result: 18
DM: (Davin) Judging by the tracks, you see that they lead out of the room and head north, towards the door on the opposite side of the room.
Davin: Davin turns and follows the tracks. "It looks like they took whoever was in here this way."
DM:
DM:
Maxkol: Maxkol turns to follow Davin.
DM: (All) As you approach the opposite door, a sense of foreboding fills you...
Maxkol: Maxkol keeps the torchlight away from the door for the moment
Davin: Davin opens the door, and slips inside.
* DM Davin, roll Stealth
Davin: Stealth check result: 25
DM: (Davin) An icy wind blows out of this door’s entry, though no air movement is discernible. Carved into the curved walls are recessed shelves piled high with very old human remains. The chill in the air grows as you enter deeper.
Davin: Davin moves forward, eyes out for any danger.
Davin: Perception check result: 9
DM: Ahead of you, you see the hallways curve left, right, and a set of stairs descend into blackness infront of you.
* DM HOLD
DM: A ghastly, disease-ridden figure crouches in the room upon a stone slab. The creature is muttering one word over and over again. It turns to look at you, opening its impossibly wide mouth of jagged, hungry teeth to enunciate: “Flesh!”
* DM Davin, roll Initiative
Davin: Initiative roll: 14.
DM: Edit: The creature does not see Davin, but instead can be seen whispering a word over and over..."Flesh!"
* DM Actions Davin?
DM: Note: It appears to be proceeding down a hallway towards an adjacent room, from which no light emits...
Davin: Davin moves further into the room, looking around.
* DM HOLD
DM: You find yourself in a cave, the ripple of water echoing off the walls around you. A still pool of water dominates this room, which is noticeably more humid than others inside the catacombs. A sheen of water droplets covers the walls and a decorative spire in the center of the fountain in room glows like a torch, casting bright light about the room.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin makes his way back, attempting to slip back past to rejoin the others.
Davin: Stealth check result: 13
* DM Davin, as you slip through the intersection, you see the creature standing in what appears to be a black stone circle. You get the impression that it is...basking...in whatever dark energy the stone eminates...
DM: (All) Having returned from his scouting mission, Davin soon rejoins you next to the doors to the intersection...
Maxkol: Maxkol eyes Davin as he returns
Davin: "Ok, there's a ghoul standing off to the left about twenty feet in, then it comes to some stairs and a pool emitting light."
Davin: "Stay close to me and we should be able to slip by together."
Maxkol: I have this torch.
* DM Loki nods, drawing his wand nervously...
Davin: Davin leads the two back into the room, hold the arm of each as they make their way across.
Maxkol: Maxkol puts out his torch
* DM Loki does as well, looking extremely uncomfortable at having to leave the comfort of the nearby braziers...
* DM Party, roll Stealth
Davin: Stealth check result: 16
Maxkol: Stealth check result: 19
* DM HOLD
DM: (All) As you begin to make your way back across the intersection, only Davin is able to see the way ahead. You hear the faintest whisper of a word repeated over and over: “Flesh!” However, as you begin to cross the intersection, you soon hear the whispering stop.
* DM Party, roll Initiative.

As the zombie continues to slam at him, its gnashing teeth attempting to chew at his flesh, Davin slams his blade into the creature's chest, and grabbing the hilt with two hands, puts his weight into dragging the blade downward in a vertical slash. His blade leaves smouldering ash as it traces its way down the zombies chest, eventually exiting and leaving the zombie to split in two, landing on the flagstones before you, burnt flesh filling the room.

Davin: After a breather, Davin has recovered all Encounter powers.
DM:
Davin: Davin turns to survey his surroundings, turn first to move towarsd the room to his right.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) The smell of rotting meat lingers in this area. It is a cloying, overwhelming stink. You hear several loud screams that echo off the stone of the crypts. The screams are easily identifiable as the desperate squalls of a human child. The sounds issue from the northern passage. Mumbled words that sound like a chant issue from the darkness at the bottom of the stairs, followed by muffled whimpers and pleas.
DM: This room has alcoves full of skeletal remains along the south wall, plus an annex with a fountain. Carved into the walls is this repeating message: “Honor the Heroic Guardians of Rivenroar.” This alcove is bare of any decoration except large urns in each of the four corners. Several small, empty niches are carved along the walls. In one corner, the disarticulated skeletal remains of long-dead humanoid are crumpled in a pile.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin quickly and silently moves forward, using what cover there is to mask his approach, as he makes his way towards the sounds of the child.
* DM Davin, roll Stealth
Davin: Stealth check result: 17
Maxkol: Maxkol moves forward until he can see the child, stealthfully
Maxkol: Stealth check result: 17
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin, Maxkol) You manage to sneak forward, unobserved. Hiding behind a pillar, you are able to observe a room ahead.
DM: (Davin) While Maxkol is effectively blind, Davin is able to see that Paintings on the walls depict a series of older, robed humans, standing on clouds or riding chariots through the sky. The faces are more realistic than the other elements, suggesting that the art is intended as portraiture. Of the portraits along the south wall, three have been defaced. Great stacks of bones are piled on the ground. The mounds are 2 feet high and include many humanoid skulls. Bookcases constructed of humanoid skeletal parts sag under the weight of hoary tomes and scrollcases. Two thrones sit along the north wall of this immense chamber. Piles of bone litter the ground.
DM: A flickering purple light dimly illuminates this pillared chamber. In the center of the chamber, a bound and gagged child struggles atop a four-foot-high stone sarcophagus. Bloody illumination bathes this chamber hewn from sulfur-yellow stone. Barrels and crates are scattered about on the floor, each bearing arcane symbols. A halfsized human skull sits on the sarcophagus next to the child’s head. The skull is the source of the purple illumination.
DM: Two figures stand near the child, one a cloaked figure, the other a massive bleached skeleton that stands passively nearby. A pair of feral and misshapen clawed hands covered in pale skin trace magic runes into the air as it begins to summon a ritual that will do something unspeakable to the child. “Yesssssss, this one has much animussssss. So young…so many yearssssss remaining!”
DM: With but a thought, the creature summons a gilded scroll to fly from one of the shelves to hover into the air before its hands. While reciting the text in the dark tongue of the ancients, the atropal begins etching intricate glyphs with its shriveled forefinger into the flesh of the child, who begins to scream in pain. Dark tendrils of blackened veins begin to grow, raised against the skin of the child’s body as necrotic energy begins to crawl through his system. After completing the beginning of the ritual, robed form turns to fix its milky white eyes upon you, and its words spill into your mind as if commanding its subjects. “Step forward visitors. Aid me in this grand invocation. If we succeed, the Blood Lord will be pleased, and I will reward you greatly!”
* DM RESUME
* DM The bleached skeleton turns towards you, but does not move. Harrowzau watches your position intently, as if in eager anticipation, "Tell me...did you slay that fool Sinruth? I smell his blood on you. I could use such as you. Come out...I see you hiding behind that pillar there..."
Davin: As soon as Davin sees the scene, he charges for the dais, moving to attack Harrowzau.

* DM Faced with the skeleton before him, Davin immediately presses the attack. As the skeleton lashes out with its scimitar, Davin retaliates with a parry and a smash to the side of the skeleton. Bone splinters, filling the air, the skeleton continues on, unconcerned. Davin rolls to the side, dodging another stroke with the scimitar that leaves sparks filling the air as the blade meets the stone floor. Moving forward, he lashes out, cleaving an arm off of the skeleton at the shoulder. To his disgust, it continues crawling towards him. Davin stops on it, grinding the arm to powder.

* DM Maxkol launches a series of blows at the two skeletons next to him. The ki energy in each strike shatters the skeletons, sending bones clattering to the floor. Moving quickly, the monk leaps over the two thrones, narrowly missing a scimitar attack by the boneshard skeleton. Launching a side kick at the skeleton, the skeleton flies through the slam into the adjacent wall, exploding in a shower of bone shards. Turning, the monk rotates and to your amazement, catches the scimitar blade between the palms of his hands. You hear the bones of the boneshard groan as the animus struggles to overpower the monk, but Maxkol's ki is stronger. With a shout, Maxkol spins to the side, disarming the skeleton, flips the sword through the air, and leaping into the air, sends a well placed kick to the hit of the blade, sending it sailing through the air in a spinning arc to slice through the midsection of the boneshard. With a groan, the top shears from the bottom, landing with a shower of bone at Maxkol's feet.
* DM However, as you manage to slay one skeleton, you see another pile of bones begin to quiver in the corner. Soon it reassembles into another skeleton.

With a roar, Maxkol slams his fist into the creature's skull, shattering bone and cartalidge and sending a blast of ki at the the glowing blue coal of energy that forms the beasts animus. The pain is enormous as necrotic energy feeds back into the sudden ki construct, seeking to overwhelm Maxkol's being. With a shout, Maxkol increases his power, the twin dragon tatoos on his forearms exploding in brilliant light. The rest of the party is forced to shield their eyes as the light becomes so brilliant that is difficult to see. Launching a bolt of black miasma, the ranger bats it aside with ease, the bolt disintegrating against the blade, "Apparently not." Backing away, Harrowzau continues to launch bolts at Davin, the ranger calmly slipping into Tortoise Defends his Home and Grass in the Forest. "No! You will not!" the necromancer screams, "The Raven Queen has no power over me, nor do you champion of the fell!" Davin gives Harrowzau a small smile skirting around a bolt to sink the blade into the necromancers chest. Pausing to twist the blade, he whispers into Harrowzau's ear, "I am no champion of the Raven Queen, but I will deal death this day." Harrowzau's eyes open in pain as the radiant light of the blade begins to expand, eating at his chest. The wight screams as he slowly becomes consumed with energy, the play between radiant light and necrotic energy creating a storm of energy that rips his soul apart. With a scream there is a blast of energy, consuming the necromancer and leaving only his clothes and belongings in his wake.

The ruby red gem begins to glow brilliantly, and you sense a humming begin to fill the room as Loki manipulates the energies of the room. A cold begins to fill the room, frost creeping up your armor to form spiderwebs of ice cycles. It is then that you notice that the thrumming is coming from the menhir stones themselves. Suddenly, the menhir adjacent to the Offalian explodes in a tornado of ice, wind, and snow, wreathing the Offalian frost. The undead creature bats at the wind around him ineffectually, his movements becoming slower as ice begins to seep from the ground and up the creature's legs and arms. The offalian shudders as it attempts to move, and you hear the groan of ice, but Loki increases his power, the diadem flaring with scarlet light in contrast to the azure blue of the menhir stones. The rate of the ice increases, and the movement of the offalian slows and soon it is encased in a massive block of ice. From within the ice, you see two coals of necrotic fire continue to glow, and then finally dim.
* DM END COMBAT

Loki: After a breather, Loki has recovered all Encounter powers.
Maxkol: After a breather, Maxkol has recovered all Encounter powers.
Davin: After a breather, Davin has recovered all Encounter powers.
* DM Loki slumps against the wall, clearly drained from his effort.
Maxkol: Maxkol ends his movement by sweeping his legs together into a normal standing pose, and pushes his hands down, exhaling, and reflecting on the last fight to learn what he can from it.
Davin: Davin stands in one place, arms slumped to each side, as he catches his breath.
Davin: "Certainly making us earn our pay on this one, aren't they?"
Maxkol: "We have done a good thing here, today."
Loki: Loki has achieved a Milestone, and gains one action point.
Maxkol: Maxkol has achieved a Milestone, and gains one action point.
Davin: Davin has achieved a Milestone, and gains one action point.
Davin: "I'm not familar with the let them chew on you...then break their jaw technique. No offense, but I think I'm going to avoid that one."
Maxkol: "It was faster than I thought, but it did provide a great vantage point to fight from."
* DM Loki, "I'm not familiar with THE FUCKING MASSIVE ZOMBIE GOLEMS TRYING TO KILL US!!! If this doesn't get me laid, nothing will!"
Maxkol: "You should think about checking your bow string when you get a chance."
Davin: "Too bad there was no one hear to see it. Not a single damsel tied to a post. Nada."
Davin: Davin sheathes his swords, turning and surveying the carnage around them.
* DM Loki wanders up to the frozen offalian and inspects the creature inside. "I had no idea I could do that. I just felt the music and...well, it just happened."
Maxkol: "Good idea, the fighting here in this room."
Davin: "That I will. That I will. Think it may be a bit warn out...you know....me shooting all these things while you stand around."
Maxkol: "And, lucky that you are a descendent of Rhest"
Davin: Davin motions with his arm and shoulder, rotating it like its tired out with a smile.
Maxkol: Maxkol laughs at that
Loki: "What now?"
Davin: "Well, I don't know what luck has to do it with. I mean, you do remember how we've almost gotten smashed, cleaved, bitten and blasted. Not sure if I'd be here otherwise."
Davin: "Let's get Thurann back, make sure he had no other undead roaming around, find that witch, and get out of here."
Maxkol: Maxkol nods
Davin: "First round is on me once we get back to the tavern."
Maxkol: Maxkol brushes the bloody ice from his robes as he readies to leave
* DM Loki seems to perk up at the mention of beer and rest at the tavern.
Davin: Davin moves over to the remenants of Harrowzau.
Davin: "You did such a good job Loki, I'll even put a good word for you with the ladies. First thing first, let's find his phylactery and destroy it, before we're dealing with him again."
Davin: remnants
Davin: Davin bends down and searches them, kicking through the ash and burned shards
* DM Davin, as you search through the ashes, you notice that the robes he was wearing are as of yet untouched. They have an odd quality to them, blood red in color and highly ornate, they do not appear to be the sort of item that would be crafted by an undead.
Davin: Davin takes the robe, shaking out splinters and sparkling embers of ash, before handing it to Loki.
* DM HOLD
Davin: "What do you make of this?"
DM: (Davin) As you inspect the body, you see that the robe worn by the undead mage is clearly an ancient robe formed of fey magic.
DM: Reminiscent of the style of Eladrin templars, the upper body features a hood with the center shaped to resemble an eagle's head. The hood is connected to robes, formed of an embroidered crimson red over a tunic with black & silver edging around shoulders that is worn over a matching long sleeved under tunic.
DM: The lower part of the robes is doubly layered with the back of the robes trailing down to be longer than the front, each one on top of the other. The robes come down to the knees, parting at the sides and front-to-back to keep movement unencumbered. Around the waist is a long front and back hanging wide silver sash of padded cloth overlaid with a belt made of heavy suede, complete with three adjustable rear straps and screws to attach a scabbard and various pouches to the belt and, all tied together with an ornate silver belt buckle bearing the motif of an eagle.
DM: The fabric itself is deep crimson red, an intricate and dizzying pattern of swirls and shapes has been embroidered on the fabric of the robe in fine platinum thread. The silver grey lining also appears to have some sort of pattern on it. As you finger the areas where blood dampens the fabric, a pulse of light traces the runes embroidered into the cloth and you feel a tingle of eldritch energy as it trickles through your skin. The room suddenly takes on a crisp reality, enhancing your battle senses and reflexes with an almost extrasensory awareness.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin tosses the robe to Maxkol. "Orange really isn't your colour."
Maxkol: Maxkol takes it, and finds some clean ground to lay it out upon, clean it off quickly, and give a quick prayer over it to decry its previous owner, and then tries it on.
Davin: Davin takes a knee, checking Thurann over. "See, I always keep my promises. How are you doing?"
* DM Maxkol, as soon as you put on the robes, you immediately feel a rush of awareness and extrasensory reflexes.
Thurann: *shaking, the boy clenches his fist, standing* "I'll be all right. My dad says to always look danger in the face."
Davin: "You are the bravest boy I've met. Let's get you back to the others, we have a few things we need to do."
* DM Thurann looks at Davin: "That's ok, my dad is here too. He said he would come to rescue me. I'm sure he's on his way now."
Davin: "Well, let's just get you back for now."
* DM Thurann looks uncomfortable, "But my dad said he would come for me. He said he was going to escape, and then he'd come for me. He's guard captain you know, the finest warrior in Brindol!"
Maxkol: Maxkol examines the boy and feels the weight of his belt pouch
Davin: Davin starts leading their path back quickly, wanting to get back and complete their search as soon as possible.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin, Maxkol) With a heavy heart, you lead the boy back upstairs. However, when it comes time to pass through the room with the ettercaps, the boy catches sight of a familiar guard captain's uniform...
Thurann: "Dad? Dad! You came for me..."
Maxkol: "Brave man. He must have fought well to get so far by himself."
* DM Thurann suddenly stops as he sees the dead body of his father, crying, "Dad! No...."
* DM Thurann grips the body of his father, the corpse still twisted in pain, his mouth agape in a silent scream. It is a sight none of you ever want to see again.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: Maxkol hands the child his father's symbols of service. "Here. These are yours."
* DM Thurann sniffles, grabbing the badge and ring, "He said nothing would happen to him..."
Davin: Davin moves over to console the boy, and also usher him away
* DM Davin, roll Diplomacy
Davin: Diplomacy check result: 3
* DM Thurann shoulders the Ranger aside, "Why didn't you save him? WHY DIDN'T YOU SAVE HIM!"
* DM Thurann yells in grief, pounding weakly at the ranger.
Davin: "It was already too late when we arrived. I'm sorry."
Davin: "If there was anything we could have done, I promise you we would have."
* DM Loki wanders over, resting a hand on the lad's shoulder, "Come boy...we'll write a ballad in his honor."
* DM The boy nods, sparing an accusing glance at Davin before moving off with Loki.
Maxkol: Maxkol looks around for a proper and undisturbed crypt to place the remains of the fallen soldier
Davin: Davin shakes his head with a tired sigh
Davin: "We can do that later. Let's check out what else is upstairs."
* DM Maxkol, you believe that one of the adjacent sarcophagi in the room to the left may be an appropriate place for now.
Maxkol: "This will take but a minute"
Maxkol: Maxkol lifts the body and places it inside the sarcophagi, and offers it a prayer before moving on.
Davin: "Ok, fine."
Davin: Davin helps Maxkol, taking the body by the other end, and helping him with the burden
* DM While you are occupied, Loki leaves with Thurann before returning, bemused.
Loki: "That Red Hood is off his rocker..."
Davin: "I know I shouldn't.....but.....what now?"
Maxkol: "What?"
Loki: "He's decided that the best defense against the dark arts is to wear some sort of 'magical twig' in their hats, however the damn thing is poison oak and now Percy is having to rub ointment on his skin to deal with the rash.
Davin: Davin heartily chuckles.
Loki: "Expert of the forest my ass..."
Maxkol: Maxkol smiles
Davin: "Well, better in their hats then elsewhere."
* DM Loki snickers...
Maxkol: We still have a witch to find
Davin: "What type of ointment do you use for that rash, Loki?"
Loki: "Aloe Vera...common plant found in alot of places."
Davin: "I meant for the one in your pants."
* DM Loki stutters with rage as Davin waltzes away
Maxkol spends a Healing Surge and regains 7 hit points.
Maxkol regains 5 hit points
Maxkol spends a Healing Surge and regains 12 hit points.
Davin: Davin moves off to retrace their steps, headed back towards Harrowzau's lair.
DM: (Party) You soon find yourself back at the intersection, to your left you find a darkened room with a obsidian mandala etched in the floor. To the north a room with a pool lit by a glowing spire of rock the twists into the roof of the cave.
Davin: Davin makes his way back the way they had come, picking his way up and around the smashed columns from the monstrosity's advance.
DM: (All) Returning to the throneroom, you see the chamber is now dark, lit only by the flicker flames of your torchlight. (recap) The air smells of death. Paintings on the walls depict a series of older, robed humans, standing on clouds or riding chariots through the sky.
Maxkol: Maxkol examines the portraits that have not been defaced.
Davin: Davin searches the bookcases for any clues or for anything of interest.
DM: (Maxkol) As you examine the portraits, you see that many of them depict a men and women dressed in elaborate gowns ot suits of armor. One in particular, placed at the center of these portraits, depicts a man with dark features and black hair. His eyes smoulder as he seems to look out from the painting. He bears a passing resemblence of Harrowzau, but his cheeks remain the fresh pink of those who remain among the living.
DM: (Davin) Searching through the ruins, you find numerous scrolls bearing magical rituals. Many of them involve raising creatures from the dead, but you do notice one of interest that you are barely able to discern as a ritual of "gentle repose".
Maxkol: To make one's own family serve as minions past their time....
Davin: Davin rolls up the magical scrolls that appear of interest, and tucks them away.
Davin: "Yeah, who could even think of undertaking such evil."
Davin: Davin makes his way down the hallway, from where the Offalian emerged.
Maxkol: "This place is huge"
DM: (Maxkol) Moving forward, light spills through the ruined hallway, chunks of columns littering the hallway. Ahead of you Bright light from a brazier along the south wall lights the room, illuminating a series of four pillars. Hairline cracks appear in the stone of the already ancient pillars. You see the ancient runes have begin to dim as the arcane energy seeps out of the cracks. You would guess that the sounds of pounding you heard before was ehe creature attempting to shatter its prison as Harrowzau weakened the magic of the binding runes.
Davin: "Yeah, I can't get over how large this place is. Sinruth must have raised quite the army. We need to make sure that portal is destroyed."
Maxkol: Maxkol nods
Maxkol: "How long did he have that thing waiting here?"
Davin: Davin continues, carefully exploring the various chambers.
* DM HOLD
Davin: "I don't know. No idea."
DM: Davin, Maxkol, soon you arrive at what appears to be a door to the crypt temple. A massive raven outlines the double door, the edges of the oak door now rotted away, revealing the dim glow of candlelight on the other side.
* DM Actions Davin, Maxkol?
Davin: Davin examines the door, before opening it quietly and slipping inside.
* DM Davin, roll Stealth
Davin: Stealth check result: 29
DM: (Davin) Entering the room, lines of pews make it clear that this was once a shrine dedicated to the rune-encrusted obelisk at the north end of the room. This chamber is filled with these low pews of dusty stone arranged in rows and an altar toward the north. The area is suffused by a dim glow that seems to emanate fromA one-armed, one-eyed human skeletal figure stands chantingbefore a large engraved circle inscribed in the northwest corner of the floor of an opulent bedchamber. Prostrated around the chamber are four undead humanoids.Torches to the left and right of the obelisks that ordinarily emit bright light instead produce as much dim light as a candle. A dark creature dressed in black robes stands next to the obelisk. A slightly decayed animate corpse dressed in tattered clothes stands near the crypt entrance. A four-foot-high stone sarcophagus lies near the back of the crypt. One skeletal figure stands next to it against the far wall, and another stands in front of it.
DM: Note, you see one creature in dark robes standing next to the obelisk, chanting.
* DM Actions Davin?
DM: Davin, the obelisk itself appears to be a black crystal, motes of light float about the interior, lighting the far end of the room.
Davin: Davin looks up, eyeing the ceiling.
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) Looking up, you see two twisted creatures attached to the ceiling. Appearing to be roughly human, the creatures wear are now twisted sinew, a collection of mismatchd limbs attached to their bodies that allow them to cling to the ceiling. No longer bearing eyes, instead ocular cavities watch the darkness, their mouths appearing to have been sawed open revealing the ravaged gums and sharp pointed teeth. They cling to the ceiling, motionless, yet they seem to be watching the floor below them. You count it as a blessing that they do not yet see you...
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin lines up his bow, unleashing two arrows at the first of the pair, hoping to knock them from the ceiling.

* DM END COMBAT
Davin: After a breather, Davin has recovered all Encounter powers.
Maxkol: After a breather, Maxkol has recovered all Encounter powers.
Loki: After a breather, Loki has recovered all Encounter powers.
Darksaber: "I'm starting to wonder what isn't a dezien of this place."
Loki: "You're a life saver Maxkol, how'd you know it was behind me?"
Maxkol: "I felt it getting ready to strike"
* DM Loki looks distinctly uncomfortable, his eyes sweeping the hallway for other spirits.
Loki: "Er...you *felt* it? Like when you get a boner or something?"
Darksaber: "I don't think the thought of death does that for Maxkol."
Maxkol: "No. When you're mind and body are in touch with your environment, you wiill understand"
* DM Loki looks at Maxkol quizzically, before shrugging.
Davin: "Well...I certainly hope it doesn't"
Davin: Davin eyes the remains of the wraith, before turning to enter the chamber.
Maxkol: "thinking about death gives it power. I prefer to think about life"
Maxkol spends a Healing Surge and regains 7 hit points.
Maxkol regains 5 hit points
DM: (Davin) Re-entering the chamber, you see the towering dark crystal of the phylactery standing before you. Like the skull, it glows with an evil purple light, the sense of corruption pouring from it is palpable. Inside, motes of light glow within, captured souls subject to an eternity of torment.
Maxkol: Will your blade destroy that?
Davin: Davin pulls out the blade, striking down into the phylactery with all of his might.
* DM HOLD
DM: As your attack hits the obelisk, it shatters into a thousand pieces of obsidian glass. From inside, you hear a steady wailing, as if a thousand voices have been crying out for help, only to find sudden freedom. You see the transparent forms of hundreds of spirits, some more corporeal, a warrior here, a priest there, while others have little form other than mist that speeds through the air. Similar to before, you see a mist begin to rise around your feet, and soon you see the form of the wizard-priest standing before you, the azure gem tipped staff gripped in his hand. At his side you see the two warriors, their incandescent bodies wreathed in blue energy. Recognizing the heron marked blade at Davins side, they raise their own swords in respectfully in salute before taking their place at the wizard-priests side.
* DM RESUME
Davin: "I am sorry that you have had to wait this long for your freedom. But please know your efforts were not in vain. The evil here has been destroyed."
Spellweaver: "So...the scion arrives at last, bearing the Heron-Marked blade and saving his people from pain and torment. For this, I thank you blademaster."
Davin: "And now that you no longer defend the portal. Will its power wane as well?"
Spellweaver: "The portal was linked to the power of the phylactery, and the souls within that powered its magic. It will indeed wane, as will much of the magic here."
Davin: "I am glad to hear that. Can you tell us of anything else that needs to be done here, to scour this once proud place of its evil taint?"
* DM The spellweaver pauses, as if looking at some distant place, "I see no evil here, just a woman who remains captive in a circle of magic. I sense that she remains near the entrance to this crypt. You have only proceed through the door to the north of the entrance hall, and you will find her."
Maxkol: Maxkol smiles as the souls are released, and listens to the wizard-priest speak
Davin: "Thank you. Please do not delay your departure for our benefit. It is clear you have already waited too long."
Davin: Already waited = been forced to wait
* DM The spellweaver gives a tired smile, "You are correct. We have waited a long time. You have brought a tired spirit rest and avenged the dark prince, betrayer to the kingdom of Rhest."
Davin: Davin gives the spirit a final wave of goodbye, before it is gone.
* DM The spirit smiles, and soon the azure blue forms of the spirits around you fade, the mists disappearing until all that remains is a cold chill in the air. The room now seems...naturally quiet.
Davin: Davin searches the room, examining the chest for any traps, before pulling out the skeleton key he had found earlier.
Davin: Perception check result: 18
* DM HOLD
DM: (Davin) Examining the chest, you find nothing that you would deem a danger to you or the rest of the party. Entering the chest, you find 170 gp along with an ornate, gilded dragoncrest helm, a ceremonial platinum longsword, and a set of iron gauntlets with extensive filigree.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: "Brindol will be happy"
Davin: Davin stows the items, turning to leave the room and finish their final tasks here, eager to be back in Brindol.
* DM Loki peeks over your shoulder, "Do we have to give back the gold?"
Davin: "As I will be, once we're back and I have a soft bed between me and the ground."
Maxkol: "it's not ours to keep."
* DM Loki grins at the thoughts of activities that can be done in soft beds...
Davin: "They did not mention gold being stolen, just the items from the museum, so we will have to sort all of that out once we're back."
Davin: "Think of it as some hope, Loki."
Maxkol: There's a woman to find
* DM HOLD
DM: Your party moves to search the other room of this level. In one, you find a room dominated by a block obsidian mandala in the center of the room. As you enter the room, you suddenly notice that light from your torch has trouble penetrating the darkness. The shadows seem to stretch towards you, limiting sight to less than a few yards. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up. There’s something eerie about this place—as if the very essence of death gathers here. As you move forward, you come upon a sunburst mosaic formed of murky glass placed on the floor in the middle of the floor. As you walk closer, your lighting lowers to a low dim and the glass begins to take on a deep black color. Passageways head west then north, north then east, and due east. As you enter the hallway heading west from room has a large faultline running along its length. The hallway appears to be in poor repair, with some of the wall supports having rotted away and dirt piled on various parts of the floor.
DM: The delilapidated condition of this hallway prevents you from moving further...
DM: In the other room with the pool, you find that A still pool of water dominates this room, which is noticeably more humid than others inside the catacombs. A sheen of water droplets covers the walls. A decorative spire in the center of the fountain in room glows like a torch, casting bright light about the room. When you disturb the pool of water in the center of room, rather than ordinary ripples, the waves and ripples form crude but recognizable images. While the ripples don’t show a lot of detail, the pool shows a room with a displacer beast statue and an altar with a raven atop it before fading away after a few sections.
DM: Swishing the pool further shows another room, one with an old woman sitting in the center of a bright rune circle. She seems extremely annoyed and displeased...
DM: Finding nothing else, your party returns to the entryway, where you find the Red Hood putting on what appears to be a 'grand' theatre production.
Red Hood: "Stand aside knave! For you shall face the tip of my blade! Avast ye hearties!"
Percy: "Oh nay fearful pirate! Please spare me the terror of the ---erm---Red Terror!"
* DM The Red Hood glares at Percy, waving his sword about, accidentally getting the blade caught in a nearby tangle of pots and pans, "You dare---Dammit Percy! Move these damned---You dared to challenge the Red Terror, and now you shall face your DOOOOOM!"
* DM Percy moves theatrically, beginning to engage Percy in swordplay, Thurann watching in rapt attention, his mouth hanging open.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: Maxkol looks over at Dravin, not wanting to interrupt the performance and points to the northern door
DM: Red Hood moves theatrically
Davin: Davin stops by the doorway, watching the scene, and casts an eye over all of the individuals they have rescued, checking their state, before skirting for the northern door with Maxkol, attempting to continue on without being ensnared in a conversation.
DM: (Davin) All of your rescued hostages seem to be a healthy state. Thurann seems to have forgotten the death of his father for the moment, watching a play depicting the Red Hood's 'life story'. Jalissa watches from the corner, withdrawn yet midly amused with a smile on her lips.
Davin: Davin continues on, his view of the play changing once he has seen its impact.
* DM HOLD
DM: This room, filled with all sorts of architectural debris, has a wet, musty smell. Amid the ruins are all sorts of mushrooms, mostly with brown or gray caps. Phosphorescent fungi cover the walls and ceiling, bathing the chamber in dim light.
* DM Amid the mushrooms, you see a massive lizard with red scales and a frilled neck sleeping against a stone pillar near the corner of the room.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin attempts to determine what type of lizard it is.
Davin: Nature check result: 22
Maxkol: Nature check result: 17
DM: (Davin) You see that the lizard is of the variety known as a rage drake. Capable of attacking with both its front claws and massive jaws, it is a fearful creature, particularly when cornered and wounded, whereupon it becomes enraged and even more difficult to put down. These creatures can be domesticated and can occassionally be trained as a mount.
Davin: Davin gives Maxkol a silent signal, before moving to the left, attempting to sneak up to the lizard, hoping to not wake it.
* DM Davin, roll Stealth
Maxkol: maxkol sneaks to the right
Davin: Stealth check result: 12
Maxkol: Stealth check result: 24
* DM HOLD
DM: Davin, as you move into the mushrooms, step on a particularly large mushroom, causing the drakes eyes to snap open. It swings is head around to fix a pair of yellow eyes on you, its frills opening. A hissing sound emits from its jaws, saliva dripping from its jaws as it eyes you warily.
* DM RESUME
Davin: Davin tries to calm the creature, using what knowledge he has of it.
Davin: Nature check result: 28
DM: Davin: The first thing you do is to make yourself larger rather than smaller, knowing that showing confidence is the first thing you should do to show your dominance over the creature. The most crucial action at this stage is to make it clear that you are the hunter, not the prey.
* DM As you approach from the front, the Rage Drake watches you, its sharp teeth glistening, but does not attack.
Davin: Davin moves to the right, to allow the Rage Drake room to back away
Maxkol: Maxkol watches, prepared to spring if necessary
Davin: Nature check result: 20
* DM The Rage Drake rises to its feet as you approach. It is then that you notice the massive claws on its feet and arms. Its tail swishes half in annoyance, half in indecision as you approach...
Davin: Davin tries to make himself as big as imposing as possible, fearlessly approaching.
Davin: Nature check result: 15
Davin: Davin gives a warcry call, staring down the Drake.
* DM Davin, roll Intimidate
Davin: Intimidate check result: 19
* DM Success! As you stare the drake in its eyes, you see it lower its head and begin to back away. It roars at you, the walls shaking as it does so, but it continues to move away...
Davin: Davin continues to slowly move forward, steadily, giving another call.
* DM The Rage Drake roars in response, it's tail swishes back and forth. The rage drake bears its teeth as it begins to circle to the right of you, eyeing you as if sizing you up.
Davin: Davin draws his swords, the light glistening off of the blades
Davin: "You guys go get her. I'll stay here and keep an eye on him."
Davin: "You guys go get here. I'll stay here and keep an eye on him."
Davin: "Go along the wall to the right."
* DM The Rage Drake continues to move backward, alternately roaring and attempting to circle around you. When it reaches the corner, you see it move onto all four legs, a crouched and guarded position to allow it to spring if necessary.
Davin: Davin stops once it's in the corner, not approaching too close so that it feels cornered.
Maxkol: Maxkol moves quietly out and to the right and spots the door
Maxkol: Maxtol walks up the door
Maxkol: Maxtol attempts to listen through the door
Maxkol: Perception check result: 15
DM: (Maxkol) You hear nothing but a steady thrum of magic on the other door.
Maxkol: Maxkol opens the door....
DM: (Davin) The Rage Drake beings to relax, closing its mouth and dropping to all fours to watch you warily.
DM: (Maxkol) Looking in through the door, you see a large circle is painted on the floor of the area within sight of the entrance. Concentric 5-foot-diameter circles are inked in intricate glowing red glyphs upon the chamber’s hard stone floor. At the center, a larger glyph has been carved and traced over in blood that has now dried. You see an old woman within the glowing magic circle. \
Maxkol: "What is this?"
Davin: Davin keeps an eye on the Drake, standing still, watching it in turn.
DM: Seeing you, the old woman rises to approach you from within the circle. The woman stops just before the edge of the circle, a short, straight, hunched figure in a hooded cloak of white wool. From within her cloak, her hair hangs down in tallowy clumps, covering half of her face. Dirt rests in the creases of her skin, a dusty film over her one visible eye, and you get the feeling that there is something oddly unjointed about her entire figure, the wry disposition of her limbs. Dingy, desolate, crippled, possibly blind: that is the first impression you have of her. Yet at the sound of footsteps she jumps to her feet with unexpected agility, and tosses back her ragged hood. Her face, which had been vacant before, takes on a look of calculating cunning. Above the folds of the laid-down hood her face is hawk-nosed, seamed with old wrinkles. The eyes are bright and fierce. You can hear her muffled voice: “Free me!”
* DM Davin, roll Nature
Davin: Nature check result: 16
Maxkol: "We are here to do that. How do we free you from the circles?"
DM: Davin, now that the rage drake has calmed down, you feel that it has begun to regard you as less of a threat, but merely an object of suspicion. It has learned to respect you through your past actions.
Woman: "You must disrupt the runes somehow, the hexer that was in here drew them rather inconsistently. They were nervous in my presence, so little time was spent ensuring the spell was constructed correctly.
* DM Maxkol, roll Arcana
Maxkol: Arcana check result: 10
* DM Maxkol: As you watch the magic barrier before you, you see that there appears to be a translucent field surrounding her. You sense that if you were to make contact with the barrier, you would take damage (1d10). You do notice however, that it seems to flicker from time to time. It is almost unnoticable, but it is there.
Maxkol: "We disabled the catacomb's magical power source, is it possible that the magic of this thing will deterioriate soon? I sense i flickers weakness even now"
* DM Loki approaches the barrier, momentarily closing his eyes as he listens to the barrier, "Yes...I feel the power of the barrier draining. But I think I might be able to help it along..."
Maxkol: Maxkol watches with interest
Loki: "I'm going to increase the intensity of the field..."
Maxkol: Maxkol backs up
* DM Loki pauses to remove his wand from his belt, closing his eyes momentarily. Slowly, you see the ruby red crystal on the tip of the wand begin to glow and a crackle of magical energy begins to fill the air. The magical force field, which previously was close to translucent, begins to glow, sparks of eletricity radiate for its dome to trace along the roof of the cavern. The crystal glows brigher, and soon you feel the metal items on your body begin to be drawn to the dome, as if some force were pulling it INTO the field. The field glows brighter and brigher, forks of lighting striking the walls of the cave to crackle in the air. Suddenly, there is an explosion of energy with a loud THOOM! And the field seems to suddenly fail, and the room falls into silence.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: "Effective"
Maxkol: Maxkol turns to the woman, "Can you walk?"
Loki: "I simply made it draw its reserve of energy faster, leaving none remaining to power the field."
Maxkol: "Well done, Loki"
* DM The old woman nods, pausing to grab her cane, "I"m Zerriksa, I appreciate your help. I notice that no one from Brindol raised a finger to come to the aid of an old woman..."
Maxkol: "We were sent by Troyas"
Maxkol: "And he did mention you"
* DM Zerriksa sniffs, "Ha! A no good layabout, why in my day..."
* DM Zerriksa looks up, seeing Davin cornering the Rage Drake..."Is he mad? That's a live Rage Drake he's staring down!"
Maxkol: "No more mad than usual. Let's get you to the rest of the townsfolk before the beast gets mad at us."
* DM Zerriksa nods, skirting around Davin and the drake as she follows Maxkol to the exit.
Davin: Davin backs away, keeping an eye on the Drake, once they're clear.
Zerriksa: "Fool boy is going to get himself killed!"
* DM HOLD
DM: (Party) Having rescued the last citizen, you make your way up to the entrance where the Red Hood is wrapping up his production.
* DM The Red Hood appears to found what he deems as 'dashing' livery, consisting of a lime green jacket, white stockings, and black shoes.
Percy: "Oh hero of mine eyes, do stay and make my life happily ever after!"
* DM The Red Hood looks away dramatically into a distant imaginary sunset, "Nay, I cannot good lady, for I am filled with such heroic vigor that good deeds cannot be left unfilled. Wherever there is chest of treasure, good ladies to be ravished, and a good helping of stew to be had, there I must be. For I am...THE RED HOOD!"
* DM Thurann sits open mouthed, his eyes full of wonder.
* DM RESUME
Maxkol: Maxkol takes a seat nearby against a wall
* DM The Red Hood bows, a wide grin on his face.
Thurann: "And the evil black knight, what happened of him?"
Red Hood: "Hmmm? Oh, him? I do believe he became a tax accountant."
* DM Thurann looks confused, scratching his head.
Davin: Davin stands by the doorway, silently watching the scene.
* DM The Red Hood looks up as the party returns, "My friends! It is good to see you in good health, I had feared the worst after a tremendous rumble did shake this floor!"
Davin: "We feared the worse as well for a moment, while we were being chased by that rumble."
Red Hood: "I would have come to the rescue of course, but I promised to protect this fair lady."
* DM The Red Hood bows to Jalissa in the corner.
Davin: "We had asked you to stay. I wouldn't expect you to ursurp your duty."
Maxkol: Maxkol remains seated, enjoying the interplay of people around the room
Red Hood: "It is a shame none came to assualt my position here. They would have found my blade at their throat!"
* DM The Red Hood draws his rapier for effect, making stabbing motions at imaginary enemies.
Maxkol: "If they dared to breach your defensive barriers"
Davin: "Yes, it is a shame that you weren't....assaulted."
* DM The Red Hood brightens at the mention of his pots and pans, "Yes, quite so. I've told Percy numerous times that there is no need for his vicarious contraption!"
Percy: "Uh....sir, I think you mean---"
Davin: Davin looks over at Maxkol and Loki, the traces of battle still clearly evident in their stained clothing.
* DM Loki sees Davin's eyes, and notices that his own tunic and clothing remains drenched in dried blood and goblin ichor.
Loki: "You were saying about the tavern and soft beds?"
Maxkol: "We have to get these people there first."
* DM Thurann appears to be watching the Red Hood with awe, eying the bandit's rapier eagerly with fantasies of slaying goblins of his own.
Davin: "Yes, I'm sure everyone feels that they've had enough of a tour. Let's head back to Brindol. If we make good time we should be able to be on the road before nightfall.
* DM Sertanian rises to his feet, "Quite so, my old bones ache from resting on this cold hard floor."
Davin: be on the road = join up to the road
Adronsius: "It's best that we get packing then. No sense waiting around for more goblins to show up."
* DM With that, the hostages and the rest of the party begin assisting Percy with packing up the Red Hood's extensive belongings.
Davin: Davin moves off to quickly check and ensure the portal has lost its power, before return, ready to depart.
DM: (Maxkol) As things begin to get packed up, you can't help but notice a teddy bear amongst the Red Hood's various belongings.
Maxkol: Maxkol's eyebrow raises at that sight.
DM: (All) Soon, the entire group is packed up and ready to go...naturally with the Red Hood in the lead, ready to blaze the trail back to Brindol.
Red Hood: "Forward comrades...to GLORY!!!"
* DM END SESSION
