Maptool Screencasts (Demos and Tutorials)

Post by dorpond »

Please feel free to check out the following screencasts. They show you some of the cool features of Maptool 1.2. What else can I say - your games will never be the same again! ;)

General Overview

Lighting Effects

Interact With Objects

Using Chat

Any Genre

Massive Maps

Make Quick Maps

Using macros to move the map to a location

*** NEWLY ADDED ***
Zooming capabilities of Maptol 1.3

*****
This might help some of you in some manner. It was for a specific question about making a dual reality "dream map" but might prove valuable to some of you so I figured I would keep it. Could be used for warping into another plane or something. Basically I loaded up a map and then stamped down the other map and I switch between them both by making everything visible/not visible.

There is also a cool iPod file you can download in those links so you can show them to your friends!

Please note: If the screencast stops, hit the stop button. Wait until it loads completely and when it does, hit play again. Also, none of these files have sound.

Have fun!

This really shows off the product. I love them. I've passed along to my p&p only friends to hopefully convince them of its major potential...

They are definitely excellent!

I have two newbie questions (in demo 1):

How do you realize the vision effect when you open a door?

How do you realize the switch between the roof and the interior of a building?

Thanks!

I believe it's a manual process. Probably deleting the vbl line on top of the door. We plan to make it possible to attach vbl to tokens/stamps so that it will be automatic

I believe it's token->Visible to players, which doesn't help the GM much. There's a tracker to make stamps have an expand/collapse button on them in the GM view that will make this easier to do

Man, sorry about that - I must have totally missed this one :?

Yeah, I just manually remove the VBL (topology) layer that covers the door. Then I swing the door open and then reveal vision. Manual for now but gets the point across :)

As far as the roof trick, I have both layers on the GM side that are stamped on top of each other. The roof is on top of the inside. Then I click on the roof and make it Not Visible To Players. While the Players can now see the inside, the GM still cannot - to get around this, I just switch to Player View by hitting Control+Shift+P and play like that until they leave the building - then I switch back and make the foor visible again when the players leave the building. Manual but gets the job done.

As Trevor stated, expect these things to only get better in time - more automated for sure!

Here's a possible way to reveal the inside of the buildings, you can just right click on the roof and "change to background". then to re-apply the roof, use the token tree and find the roof on the background plane and "change to object"
