Using KPerf to fine tune connections

  1. Download KPerf from this location: http://dast.nlanr.net/projects/Iperf2.0/kperf_setup.exe
  2. Install on both machines
  3. Launch J-Perf Measurement Tool on both machines
On machine that will act as the server select Type: Server
  • Set Client Limit to number of clients that will be connecting
  • You can leave the port at the default unless you have a firewall issue that requires a different port number
  • Leave Compatibility Mode unchecked
  • Set the TCP Window Size to the best estimated window size:
slowest bandwidth * ping time

Bandwidth is going to differ depending on the actual hardware and connections being used so that is up to the user.
Ping time can be obtained by opening a command prompt and typing

PING <IP_ADDRESS>

where <IP_ADDRESS> is the IP address of the machine you are connecting to. For example: PING 192.168.254.1

Note that bandwidth and time are different units:

100 Mb * 1 ms = 100000000 * .001 = 100000 or 100KB

In this example, window size would be set to 100 KiloBytes so you would type 100K into the TCP Window Size
  • The rest of the boxes can be left blank for now.
On machine that will act as the client select Type: Client
  • Set the Protocol to TCP
  • Set the Server: to the IP Address of the Server machine leave port alone unless it was changed on the server
  • Leave Compatibility Mode unchecked
  • For Testing Mode set it as Trade and leave Port: alone for now
  • Set the TCP Window Size as appropriate, most likely it will be the same as above, but might differ depending on bottlenecks.
  • Leave everything else alone for now.
Click the Run Button
This will generate a report.

Once the report is created we can analyze what is happening. We'll post results in this thread so others can see what is going on.

Have a little time this morning...

Something isn't right with those settings.

It shows you setting the Window Size as 3KB. That should be much much higher. Try setting your window size to 16KB, set the test to run for about 5 seconds and then set to 32K, run for 5 sec, and finally set to 64K run for 5 sec. Post the results for each of the tests.

On a LAN Window Size should be much higher and transfer rates should be about 4 times larger than what I'm seeing.

After you run and post those test, I'll be able to tell you more. Oh, also set it to run a parallel test with 5 connections for about 10 seconds as well. This should uncover any router issues that might be coming up.

If it turns out the window size is setting itself too small I'll have you grab another utility that we can use to set the Window Size in the registry.

I calculated the window size based on my 300kbps speed and my 1ms ping, multiplying them together as you described.

I'll try running the tests again in a little bit with the parameters you described.

Er... 300kps?! :shock: I'm guessing you are doing this wirelessly? Even wirelessly that is slow. Is it an 802.11 G or B?

Do me a favor and rerun with it connected via cable to the router.

Based on that last set of parallel tests, your router is junk, but we need to confirm with it connected. It could just be the wireless side of the router.

Also, after you do that go to broadbandreports.com and run the Tweak test. It will give you a ton of information as well as suggestions. Don't take the suggestions though until we see the results of the connected test. A bad router will skew the results. OH! You could also run the Tweak test connected directly to the modem as well and by pass the router. That would show you the difference between the router and the modem.

I think I left off a decimal place, 3000 kbps. Three thousand kilobits per second, not three hundred.

Any particular test I should rerun with a wired connection to the router or should I run them all?

The numbers are better with the laptop plugged into the router, but the problem that I notice when using maptool still persisted when I tried it out immediately afterward. Also, I repeated a few of the wireless tests right after the wired tests, and achieved similar results as the first wireless test. (The wireless is B and not G).

Ok, we still need the results from plugging directly into the modem bypassing the router all together.

When you run the Tweak test, run it attached to the modem and then attached to the router.

I'm about 95% sure that your problems are router based.
You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me.

OK, call me slow but how am I supposed to run kperf to test the connection from one computer to the other if I plug the laptop into the modem directly? If I do this, then the router won't be present and I won't have the second computer handy to act as the server.
