Remote loading/saving of campaigns...

Post by JonathanTheBlack »

What's the chance of being able to load/save a campaign from/to an URL? This would allow play-by-post games to use MapTool without having to use an ftp program or email to transfer it back and forth.

What kind of URL?

FTP is certainly possible with lots of extra UI help (username, password) but it's not secure as both fields are passed cleartext over the 'net.

HTTP is possible (and HTTPS) except that it requires server-side support so unless the user has access to such a location that's not practical.

Using some type of Dropbox URL would work good, but I don't know if there are upload URLs for Dropbox...

You can email files to your dropbox or SugarSync account and many other cloud based services. I think there is an api for dropbox.

You could use dropbox if you sync all the computers so any changes will be made to each local computer. I haven't used this feature, but I think if you share a folder, each user will need to download the manager and 'I think' it will sync to each computer if you allow the shared users to update the folder. Each player would then just load locally and changes will be updated as long as the manager is on.

I know Dropbox could be used with a shared folder, I'm just worried about the proficiency of the end user to be able to set it up properly. I've started my play-by-post game over at PA and am using http://www.pyromancers.com for the mapping and token movement, but I'd much rather use MapTool since it's so much easier to manipulate tokens.

Hm. There's really not much to it, is there?

1. Install Dropbox. Use the instructions on their web site for that.
2. Send them a URL that they can click on to add your Dropbox to their config.
3. Profit!!

(Sorry, that last bit is typical 'net humor. And not very funny, actually. ;))
