Re: IP v6

In my experience, if you're kept Win 7 up to day, IP6 is on by default there, too.

Also in my experience (which is very limited, granted), it should work exactly like IP4 except that if you register it on the server list on rptools.net, that will be only your IP4 address. (I have no idea what would happened if you have only an IP6 address.)

If you have both IP4 and IP6 turned on, clients should be able to connect to either simultaneously. When I was testing, I changed nothing on the server and could flip back and forth.

If you have only IP6 and one or more of your players (or their ISP) has only IP4, you've got a problem.

Note that there are a lot of routers require a firmware update (which may or may not be available) for IP6 port forwarding to work right. Your ISP may or may not be cooperative on that.

Thank you for helping. Some additional researching and testing was needed, but now it works. I'm not an expert, but maybe it helps other people if I answer my own questions as good as I can.

1) Not if the client has v6 only, but normally people have Dual Stack (Lite) and it shouldn't be a problem.

2.1) Yes, and they have to enclose the v6-adress with square brackets or MapTool will not detect it as an IP-adress. For example:

Code: Select all

[2001:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7344]
2.2) There is no more portforwarding with v6, but you have to open the port.

2.3) Yes. Clients can test it here: https://test-ipv6.com

2.4) Clients have to activate v6 on their computers, it is not enabled by default in all cases.

- If you want to connect v4-only with v6-only (server/client) or vice versa, you need a "tunnel" or it will not work. In this case (and maybe some others) it may be easier to use a virtual local-network like Radmin VPN (https://www.radmin-vpn.com) or Hamachi (https://www.vpn.net).

- If MapTool should be reachable over v6, as a server there will be some configuration needed in your router probably. Also pay attention, that with v6 every device in your homenetwork gets their own unique v6-adress (keywords: v6-subnet, v6-prefix). Only with this unique adress it will be reachable for your clients.
