Could MapTool get a separate grid for playing and mapping?

Post by Soulblazer »

Title says it all.
I play GURPS, which is primarily hex based, mapping with tiles makes snapping to the grid virtually unusable, so, no grid it is.
A workaround is mapping in squares, exporting the image and then using that image as a background for a hex grid, and, admittedly, after that, very little editing is required, after all maps tend to not change that drastically so a non-grid snapping tweak to show damage, etc, is okay.

Still, would be neat if there were a separate grid for such things. Perhaps a layer based one? That could theoretically be the easiest to implement.
Instead of (re)writing a lot of code, just untie the singular grid from ALL the layers, have them accept a layer as an argument/variable, and then maybe add a tiny node editor window where one can save grid sizes and offsets, and connect them with a virtual wire to a layer.

When the user changes the layer to work on, then the program sets that grid as active and objects on that layer will snap to that grid and none of the others.
