Tutorials: Creating TokenTool Overlays in PSP and GIMP

Post by DrVesuvius »

I started looking at how to create token overlays in my two preferred graphics apps, Paint Shop Pro and the GIMP. To be honest the existing tutorials didn't really hit the mark for me (the PSP trick using the magnifying glass is very clever, but limited in what it can produce), so I've played around a bit and come up with a solid process for each app and thrown a couple of tutorials together. Hope someone finds them useful.

(I've maybe got one more tute in the pipeline, using DAZ Studio to create a true 3D ring effect.)

For future-proofing, it would be nice if the PDFs were attachments to the post instead of links offsite.

Is there an updated tutorial? The ones mentioned above do not seem to be active.

Although the above may be a bot, is there an easy to find tutorial on tokentool 2.1. I would have sworn I saw one.

I have a question on that topic:
When I took a Token Overlay from the Roll20 Marketplace i hadnt got this pink-purple background so I drew it myself in Photoshop.
But when I imported the Overlay in Tokentool 2.0 it still had a little colour left on the edges (as you can see in the attached picture.
Can someone tell me what to do to make it a good-looking token :D
I´d really appreciate any help I could get.

I would draw the overlay separately from the token ring. Your color bleed together at the edges when you added it to the token ring.

TT 2.0+ supports the use of Photoshop .psd files which are the best format for quality overlays. The overlay image goes on the top layer and the masking layer goes underneath.

In GIMP (Photoshop will be similar):

1. Load your overlay image.

2. Create a solid color masking layer below that. I used magenta (255,0,255) and called the layer Mask.

3. Use the Ellipse tool, on the Mask layer, to select the area of the mask corresponding to the center of the overlay image. It doesn't have to be exact. Just needs to extend into the fully opaque part of the overlay.

4. Cut out out the selected area.

5. In GIMP, Export As... and save as a .psd file. This can be imported directly into TokenTool.
