[D&D 4E] Dorpond's Face to Face Framework

Post by dorpond »

I have been using and tweaking my framework for a couple years now. I use it every week during game session and it has worked out very well. I thought I would share it with the community to enhance their face to face D&D gaming experience.

Updated Note: This was last tested with Maptool 1.3B70 and it works like a champ from what I could see.

Files are located here:
(Last Tested with Maptool 1.3B70)

Campaign File: http://dorpond.rptools.net/DorpondFrame ... 3b63.cmpgn

Campaign Properties: http://dorpond.rptools.net/DorpondFrame ... 63.mtprops

Campaign Macros: http://dorpond.rptools.net/DorpondFrame ... 3.mtmacset

Selection Macros: http://dorpond.rptools.net/DorpondFrame ... 3.mtmacset

In the campaign file I have some notes. I copied them below for your reference:

** This framework was designed for D&D 4th edition face to face play **
.......................Last Tested with Maptool 1.3b63.........................

This framework is something that I have been putting together and using over the last couple years. My macro writing skills are nothing to write home about so don't be surprised if they are ugly and not optimal.

I would like to thank all of those who have helped me with my macro questions on our forums. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have a framework. Thank you!

On a technical end, nothing special is needed to run this framework - There are no lib tokens and no crazy memory requirements. Just load up the campaign file and start making your maps.

This framework is currently setup to use the Selection and Campaign macro windows but depending on your face to face sessions, you may not need to use them both.

To play D&D 4, you will need to go into Preferences in Maptool (on each session) and change the Movement Metric to One_One_One. If not, the token movement won't be correct.

In general, I host my server with the following boxes checked, but these are just my preferences:
- Strict Token Ownership
- Use Individual Views

Conditions are either Red or Blue. Red means that condition also grants combat advantage. This way at a glance, all combatants can instantly tell who they have combat advantage against.

In the Campaign Macro Window, I have 3 macro groups:
Monster Only Macros (Red Macro Buttons): These are only to be used on NPC tokens since they work differently and produce a red health bar.
DM Universal Macros: These can be used on NPC, PC tokens, or no tokens at all. These are my DM tools, more or less - things that speed up game.
Player Only Macros: These are only to be used on the PC tokens. I actually drag these macros to the PC Selection Macro Window so that the players can access them. I prefer when my players manage their own token during game.

I hope this is helpful and I hope you have fun!

I created some videos to show some of the abilities of the framework. Many of these features are nothing new but they do in fact speed up my face to face game, and that is what using Maptool is all about, right? :)

I also tested the framework with 1.3B70 and it still works like a champ! Woot!

Peace out!

These look great, but I do not know how to use these macros. How do I assign one to a token? Is that even the way I am supposed to do this?

*confused*

It sounds like to me that your knowledge of Maptool is very limited atm so instead of me trying to explain every in and out, I would highly suggest that you just download the campaign file and then build your maps in that file.

This way you will already have the campaign macros - just open the campaign macro window.

Make sure you have the campaign macro and selection macro windows open.

Select all your PC tokens on the map, and then you can simply drag and drop the 'player only macros' from the campaign macro window to the selction macro window.

That is it really. Make sure the players have the selection macro window open so they can use their macros. Or if you want to control everything, you don't even need to do that. Just use the macros in the GM's session.

Good luck and welcome to the party!

Thanks, Dorpond.

I seem to have figured out how to import your tools via trial and error. I got the "campaign" button checked and then right-clicked so as to import a macro set. It seems to be working. (fingers crossed)

Cool tools, BTW.

We played last night using your frame, it went great.

I've tried other extensive frames before and I like the quickness of this one.

I was wondering, since you input the values for the skills onto each token is there a macro that will call up a window and make a roll to the chat window using these values?

Thanks and nice work

Glad you like it!

Sorry about the delay - I just got this. I was never notified of the post for whatever reason :?

I created a macro button for you - When you download it, rename the file to Skill Check.mtmacro. Just import the button in your macro panel and it will appear.

Have fun!

Hey Dorpond. I have used yours and Rumble's frameworks off and on for the past year and a bit, but have been playing in a face to face for the last bit, without using maptool. I am getting back into the digital versions, and downloaded yours again. The group wants something with the basic elements, face to face, without the complexity of Rumble's.

I have been trying to figure out why, when I load the campaign, the light sources work on your default map, but whenever I make a new one, the lighting acts weird.

The candle, for example, only goes to the token's edge. I have tried in each version on maptool all the way from 1.3.b70 up to the current 1.3.b86. Each time it has been the same result.

Any ideas?

Glad you found some value in it! :)

My guess is that your New Map settings are incorrect. I just opened the campaign file in the latest MT and it still works like a champ.

When I create a new map, I set the settings to this:

Thank you. As soon as I saw your image, I realized what I did. I had the distance per cell set to 5. Needs to be 1.

Now, on to map building.

Thanks again.
