Here is a link to a cool pitch about the original Dave Arneson rules that, with Gary Gygax, spawned D&D and all RPG's that followed.

It's very difficult separate what each of those two literally "brought to the table" in the early years, and I'm certain some in the various camps will disagree with whether or not Dragons at Dawn is 100% Arneson's vision of the first days of gaming... but I'm betting this is going to be a great read anyway.
