All,

We've launched a few different methods over the years to help pay for hosting and development tools. We began with PayPal donations then moved to bidding on the Wall of Features. PayPal donations never covered the RPTools expenses and the Wall of Features turned into a bit of a boondoggle. We could run a Kickstarter of GoFundMe but our expenses aren't all that big so those seem overkill. We decided on a different approach this go around.

We became an Amazon and DriveThruRPG affiliate and put MapTool on as a product on DriveThruRPG as a 'Pay What You Want' - which can still be free but allows downloaders the option of donating to RPTools. We placed some affiliate links on the rptools.net website and social media. This generates a dribble of income which helps us pay the bills. The good news is we appear to be able to pay our web hosting service this year. (Thanks Az and Trevor for paying the bills to date).

Should we generate funds over the hosting fees, we have some optional expenses we'd like to fund such as security certificates for the software and internationalization for the rptools.net website.

So, if you're interested in supporting RPTools without doing anything other than you're doing now. Please click on the links below to get to your favorite shopping sites.

In addition, if you want to donate to RPTools, follow this link to the RPTools DriveThruRPG product page to download MapTool and donate a bit at the end. Regardless of whether you donate, downloading the software from this site will take some of the load off rptools.net and give us the ability to inform you when a new release comes outs.

I hope this works out to generate some semi-steady income streams.

Have you thought about using Patreon also to let folks toss in a buck or two a month? Might be a little odd as typically those contributing above a certain level get some kind of extra benefit which doesn't make as much sense with MapTool. Still, it is has the advantage of being a pretty painless way for folks to provide ongoing support.

At this point, I'd rather have it be a passive sort of thing rather than asking for direct contributions via Patreon, GoFundMe or Kickstarter. Most of us buy things on Amazon and DriveThru so it seems an easy way to have a small funding steam and take some load off the rptools server for downloads.
