Disscussion

Post by ithildur »

NOTE FROM DM:
This is where any non-announcement goes, in the announcement thread I would like only urgent announcements.
Here is is appropriate to discuss:
Character changes
Debates
Whats up with the server
and stuff like that.
This is an edit by the DM/mod

Making some last minute decisions about my ftr4/wiz1 (I've decided to keep it simple rather than going with Tome of Battle classes, although I would like one of the alternate class features from PHB2), which will depend to some extent on what everyone else is running.

Can folks list what kinds of characters they've decided on?

Going wizard conjuration specialist so if you're going fighty my critters will give you some nice flanking. I banned necromancy and evocation if it matters to you

Nice, Conjurers are awesome! Although I'm definitely going Conjuration as well, focusing more on tossing out defensive buffs and occasional battlefield control stuff like Grease, Web for tactical advantages; banning Enchantment and Evocation.

Evocation is not needed since Conjuration gives you stuff like the Orb spells; glad you can cast Enchantment spells when needed (as they can be quite useful at times; would definitely love it if your guy ever scribed scrolls or crafted a wand of Heroism and buffed the front liners!).

Since we're both going Conjuration, I may as well check with the DM whether Immediate Magic acf from p. 70 of PHB 2 is ok? The Conjuration ability is very nifty, although a 1400gp magic item can duplicate it's effects.

btw i still cannot get skype or vent to install on my machine. may be just as well, as most days at the hours we'll play I will be in a (possibly noisy) public setting.

huh, 2 conjurations focused wizards I think is a bad idea. Let me know if you're 100% on this because I may just change. I'll have to rewrite my background some, but that would just be too redundant for there to be 2 of us the exact same thing minus 1 school. Message back on this or tell germo so I can know

Actually scratch that first message, I don't want to change. Germo you may just have to deal with two of the same character, I don't have enough time to change classes and change my background to fit with it and I already spent time making tokens.

My character will be vastly different from yours even though he's a conjuration specialist, being that he's a melee gish; initially he'll hardly cast any spells at all. He'll also seldom rely on summons, which sounds like a focus for your character (although a druid is a better summoner really).

We'll be fine; conjuration is the best specialist school in 3.5e, and not having evocation really doesn't hurt. Heck, if I were playing a pure wizard I'd even consider focused specialist Conjuration (losing access to a third school), it's such a good school.

As long as we have the factotum for skills we'll be fine; add a divine caster and/or bard and we'd really rock, but as long as we have the factotum, a wizard, and my guy tanking we've got all basic roles covered.

Cool, I was worried we'd made duplicates which was a bummer since I had built this character, complete with background, weeks ago.

As for which is better druids vs wizards for summoning? Hmm I'd have to disagree and say summon monster. Summon Nature's Ally has the most offense and most HP, but SM critter have more defenses (DR/resistances), more INT (which can be important for giving them verbal commands where as SNA requires a handle animal check to direct creatures), and more spell like abilities. Overall SM just has more options which to me, means more solutions to problems. I plan on going into Malconvoker when I can which is where the wizard summoner really shines and the gap between the two will be more obvious.

I don't' think Nik is going factotum, I think he's going binder, but I'm honestly not sure and I have no idea what that other guy is playing.

Someone was planning a factotum unless they changed their mind.

As for summoning, it's the fact that druids can do everything that they do (full casting, wild shape, animal companion) and be able to spontaneously convert any spell to a summon that makes them nice; I tend to value flexibility/options in 3.5 in a wide open campaign, vs say a dungeon crawl. The druid can prep the slots for other things and instantly convert them to summons if it's needed, whereas a wizard has to dedicate that slot to a summon spell.

Not saying summoning wizard is a bad choice at all though; summon monster provides a wide variety of options/flexibility in itself so that's not a bad way to go at all.

I'm also looking forward to learning by watching you use a summon focused character creatively. 8)

Uh oh... I anticipate some IC conflict if he's dabbling/binding in anything that seems related to demons!

Aren't Binders supposed to be ridiculously complicated to play?
