Session 0: A Foreword

Post by Tracker4502 »

Every story has a beginning. Even those that no one is able to tell.

Sembia and Cormyr are at an uneasy peace. To the North Netheril stirs once more and sets its sights upon world conquest as it did in the past, starting with its ancient rival of Cormyr. Both have been launched into a state of war, but neither has the resources required to stage a full assault against the other. Only skirmishes for minor strategic locations have occurred, and no real progress by either side has been made. As such, both look for allies to bolster their strength and win the conflict once and for all.

Sembia to the East had been Cormyr's ally in times of great peril, and as such the forest kingdom assumed that Sembia would take up arms for their cause once more. With their pride blinding them, they began to court the elves of the wood for their favor, but in doing so they neglected to win the hearts of the Sembians. For Sembia had been in the grip of a substantial famine before Netheril's reemergence, and Cormyr had failed to provide aid to the neighboring nation in its time of need. This apparent apathy on Cormyr's part for their supposed ally's suffering cooled the once strong bond that Sembia held dear.

Netheril took notice of Cormyr’s haughty assumption and saw the unrest that was developing in the struggling nation. In a move that surprised all, the newly returned nation committed a large percentage of its resources to winning over the Sembians, to accomplish that which Cormyr had forgotten to do. Sembia, in light of this recent development, has become wildly prosperous from the new influx of trade and gifts from Netheril. From their perspective, while Cormyr was once their ally the forest kingdom seemed to only be interested in making demands while giving nothing in return. But the Netherese have catered to their desires, and it has convinced many to reevaluate their stance upon these two warring nations.

While Sembia remains neutral in the war, its people are beginning to favor Netheril as their new potential ally instead of their traditional partner Cormyr. If Sembia was to align with Netheril, Cormyr would be flanked and without allies, meaning its demise would be assured. But if Sembia was to remain true to its allies of old, Netheril would be significantly weakened from the loss of resources it had granted to Sembia.

The story begins with a chance meeting on the docks of Selgaunt between three unique but otherwise seemingly unremarkable individuals. From there, they will have to decide their own fates through the world and, in time, leave their own mark upon it.
"I will live forever, or die trying!"
