Session 1: A 'Chance' Meeting

Post by Tracker4502 »

Leave it to Chance? My boy, why would I ever do something so foolhardy?

Though this story has many different points of view during its telling, I have decided to narrate from this point. Why, you may ask? For the sake of prudence. So, to begin...

A tall Dragonborn by the name of Valkahim stepped off the transport ship and breathed in the fresh sea air for one last time. He had just arrived in Selgaunt and was looking for a possible job at the suggestion of his master, but he sadly knew little of the city of what such an employment opportunity would entail. All he had in the way of direction were a name, Faradail, and the city of Selgaunt. After surmising the ships nearby, he came across a Human that stood out from the rest: this one carried a special air of... dignity? Refinement? Perhaps purpose? Regardless of the man's reasons, Valkahim struck up a conversation with the intriguing fellow to hopefully glean some information about the city. As fate would have it, the human was also looking for Faradail, and as such the two decided to join up in order to find this person of interest. From the shadows, a third member had took notice of this partnership and was watching the two of them with intense interest.

They headed to the Merchant's Respite Tavern in the marketplace district, and over drinks they formally introduced themselves. The Human was named Ronin Vern, and though he was low on coin at the moment he considered himself a merchant. He was seeking the Faradail fellow in order to secure safe passage into Netheril, as there he was hoping to find an individual skilled enough to repair his chronograph. But as their conversation waned on, both noticed that an Elf from the docks had followed them here, and he seemed to be keeping an eye on them. Though the Elf commented that it was simply a chance occurrence, the Human waiting outside the tavern was met on entirely different terms. Adair was his name, and though he was strangely dressed the man confessed he had overheard them speaking of Faradail. For reasons known only to him, he wished to join the Dragonborn and Human in their quest to find this person of interest.

With three in their budding group, they set out once again for the port district, as Adair commented that he had heard the name connected to some rather shading dealings. However, by this point Ronin decided that subtlety didn't suit him, and he loudly called out to inquire if anyone knew about the mystery man of Selgaunt, Faradail. While they were met with strange looks, one cautious man tentatively stepped forward and remakred that he knew the name. After some convincing by Ronin, the man confessed that Faradail could be found in the Wandering Eye, the largest tavern in the district.

Their arrival in the establishment yielded a surprise, as the Elf from the docks was waiting for them there. He waved them over, and cautiously they sat down at the Elf's lonely table while eying the surroundings. The room was dimly lit, most likely by design, and the patrons seemed the sort who were not above anything that a common man might consider fiendish. But their interest was drawn to the table in the corner where they sat, as five chairs faced the ominous darkened corner. Through obscurity where none could see, a voice emerged and told them the game: he was Faradail, and he had a job for them.

Yet before they could begin the talk of missions and plots, a man with singed skin landed upon Valkahim with a mighty thud. After emerging from the collision, the mysterious individual introduced himself as Jinuzi-Gigen. He was a genasi, which explained his skin's texture and color, and he was a swordmage sent to assist, which explained his presence. With the mystery tabled for now, Faradail made it clear that he was not enthused with Adair's presence; though there were five chairs, Adair was not the individual he had sent for. But, with no alternative he begrudgingly accepted Adair into the company and gave them their mission.

Their mysterious employer revealed that he worked for the city, and that he had sent out for all of them save Adair when it became obvious that above average individuals were needed. Each of them had heard of Faradail through someone whom he had dealt with in the past, and the benefactor hoped that the recommendation of these assorted individuals given by his contacts would be an assurance of their skill. The reason for their assembly was that the city had a job they needed completed but they could not risk the guard getting involved. For you see, a small smuggling company that operated out of the Church of Sune had come to the attention of Faradail, and the powers that be decided that they did not want to break the ring up. Instead, they wished to reach an agreement with the smugglers to bring them to heel. This was where those gathered came in. They were to meet with the leader of the operation and attempt to reach an understanding about the future of their ring. If no such understanding could be reached, they were to deal with it (in Faradail's own imaginative words).

Thus the five were joined together in a common mission, and the story of their true exploits can begin.
"I will live forever, or die trying!"
