Total Newbies to EVERYTHING, Help!

Post by Akio_Horri »

I'm really hoping I posted this in the right section. If not, please move it to what is the correct section.

So my girlfriend and I want to get into tabletop RPGs. we're in a long-distance relationship, so this is the only way possible for us to play together. The issues is that we have no idea what we're doing. I'm not much more tech savvy than the average person, (I know what the C:/ drive is, I know one or two cmd commands, etc.) but I pick up on stuff pretty quick so I'm wondering if there is anyone who is well experienced in this program to help two newcomers a major amount of much needed aid. We know next to nothing on tabletop RPGs, and even less about MapTool, so you can see why we're so confused. We need someone to show us how to set up MapTool for Pathfinder as I can't seem to find any YouTube tutorials for it. If someone actually has a tutorial for this, please send me a link or something so I can find it. Please? I'll g1ve you a cookie! :D

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

-Akio

I made this video on how to install: http://forums.rptools.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=25523

Here are various tutorial videos on how to use the program in general: http://www.rptools.net/tutorials/

Here's a campaign file designed for Pathfinder, one of many but the most comprehensive: http://forums.rptools.net/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=26006

And some tutorials on the features of campaign macros: http://forums.rptools.net/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=25374

And if you want to start to tackle macro writing then wolph42 has a collection of links to help with that: http://forums.rptools.net/viewtopic.php ... 49#p252549

My advice to everyone new to Maptool, is to start using it just as a whiteboard. Don't try anything complicated. Just use it like you would use any piece of paper to draw your maps, as your gaming session progresses. Start using tokens to represent players and monsters, use the chat to roll dice. Then as you get use to it, start recording data on the tokens. Slowly start building your own functions to do tasks you repeat a lot. Gradually you will learn the tool, and then you will be ready to use someone else's framework.

But post questions here, we will do our best to reply :)

Maptool is the Millennium Falcon of VTT's -- "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

Those are the same vids I pointed out.
I like being able to see all of Brad's videos on one page through the link I provided (instead of only 4 at a time). :p

I've got nothing to add to the good advices regarding MapTool already given above, but as you're also new to tabletop RPG I'd advise you to find a playing group willing to play with you and would introduce you live to MapTool and RPG. You might find one in this forum.
