Tips for a Beginner: Setting Up My First Campaign in MapTool?

Post by anchusa »

I'm new to MapTool and just starting to explore all its features. I’m planning to use it for my first virtual tabletop RPG campaign, and I could use some advice from the experienced users here.

Here's my setup:
  • The campaign is a fantasy-themed D&D 5e adventure.
  • I’ve already installed MapTool and have watched a couple of beginner tutorials.
  • I’m using a mix of pre-made maps and custom ones created in a map editor.
My questions are:
  • What are the must-know tips or shortcuts for a smooth first session?
  • Are there specific features I should prioritize learning first (e.g., fog of war, macros, etc.)?
  • Any advice on organizing assets like tokens, maps, and handouts to keep everything efficient?
  • Is there a way to pre-configure NPCs or monsters to save time during sessions?
Thanks in advance for your guidance! I’m excited to dive into this and create an awesome experience for my players.
Every great campaign starts with a single escape road click.

I recommend joining Discord and then download one of the 5e frameworks (collection of tokens and macros designed for game system). My first time using MapTool I just used it for the map and token placement. Then I would use it for Initiative and then start using some of the framework tools like tracking HP and doing attack rolls.

Put everything in one folder, organized in subfolders by whatever seems logical to you when you're adding new things. But - and this is the important part - give each image a descriptive name. Then you can use the built-in search function to find what you need in a hurry.
